The Cardboard Stories

The many problems of the homeless of Tampa Bay have played out in the news lately. Recently, they played out in original music and drama on the stage at the Palladium theater. A cast made up of veteran actors and singers, including a former Miss Florida, and homeless performers from the streets of St. Petersburg starred in the premiere of a play called Blissful Turmoil, presented by the Pinellas County Coalition for the Homeless. The play was the first of four "Cardboard Stories" that will be performed this year. All were written by local actor/singer Marvia Joye Watkins. A musical score that drives the stories was composed by St. Petersburg Christian/Gospel singer September Penn. She performs the songs with an ensemble of local singers and musicians. Blissful Turmoil was inspired by Watkins' interviews of homeless people at Williams Park. The play was set there. It told the tale of a homeless teenage mother played by Akisha Fussell, a student at Shorecrest Preparatory School, and a young woman who tries to help her, played by Rachael Todd, Miss Florida 2009.
