Despite a Dec. 31 deadline set in 1991, Florida has thousands of obsolete underground fuel storage tanks underground that haven't been repaired and are dangerous to water supplies.
A Florida Department of Environmental Protection database shows tanks that were in violation as of Jan. 4. There are 590 tanks at 196 locations in the Tampa Bay area. Some are no longer in use and pose more of a risk, others are still being used.
