Republican Party of Florida credit card scandal

The Republican Party of Florida under former chairman Jim Greer paid about $7 million to American Express from 2007 to 2009. RPOF stopped issuing credit cards in August 2009 after Greer cut up his own American Express card at a party meeting to quell the growing scandal. Republican party staffers and certain legislative leaders were given credit cards and allowed to spend donors' money with little oversight. Greer was ousted as chairman in early 2009, replaced by state Sen. John Thrasher calling for a time of "unity and healing." In the early months of 2010, IRS and federal criminal investigations got underway targeting Republican Party of Florida spending.
