Haitian medical refugees photo gallery

In the days and weeks after the deadly earthquake, badly injured Haitians were flown to hospitals in Tampa for emergency care. When they were released, healthier though not whole, they stayed in Tampa. Fifty of the refugees are housed in an apartment complex south of Gandy Boulevard. They represent the gamut of ailments related to the disaster, but they have one thing in common: they are all struggling to gain financial independence. Do this and they have a shot at staying here. Fail and they will be sent back to Haiti, something to be avoided at all costs. For some of them it is as simple and as terrifying as leaving the apartment to get on a bus.
