Ten years ago this weekend, with much fanfare, the Suncoast Parkway opened, providing a direct link from the heart of the North Suncoast to the greater Tampa Bay area. During the early years, revenue grew steadily as thousands of commuters used the toll road to get to and from work each day and others made trips to the airport and the malls. The peak came in 2007, when $21.7 million in tolls was collected. As the economy tanked and unemployment rose, revenue fell during 2008 and 2009. But there was an uptick in 2010, and projections show a steady rise for the next several years as the economy begins to improve. And developers say the highway puts the North Suncoast in excellent shape to benefit from the economic turnaround.
