On Sept. 11, 2001, we began to count new things, speak new words, think new thoughts and fear new threats. Our economy briefly shuddered, then soared, then crashed. We went to war and stayed there. The information on this page reminds us that the changes we thought were ushered in that terrible morning pale in comparison to the ones we never saw coming.
