Freddie Solomon dies after battle with cancer

Freddie Solomon, the dazzling University of Tampa quarterback and Super Bowl champion receiver with the 49ers, died Monday after a nine-month battle with colon and liver cancer. Mr. Solomon was 59.

Solomon, nicknamed Fabulous Freddie when he was the face of the Spartans football program in the 1970's, was a second-round draft pick by Miami and played 11 seasons in the NFL for the Dolphins and 49ers from 1975-85. But to a generation of youths in Tampa, he was best known for his work for more than two decades in the Hillsborough Sheriff's Department's outreach program.
