49ers give coach win as parting gift
SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Jim Tomsula praised his players for delivering a win at season's end.
It didn't save his job.
The first-year 49ers coach was fired after Sunday's game ended when Phil Dawson kicked a 23-yard field goal 11:33 into overtime to beat the Rams (see 4C).
Dawson came through after Dontae Johnson blocked Greg Zuerlein's 48-yard field goal, giving San Francisco the ball back. Blaine Gabbert passed for 354 yards for the 49ers.
Free agent to-be Dawson — who turns 41 later this month and wants to return for an 18th season — also kicked a tying 38-yard field goal with 4:33 remaining.
For the Rams, another big question faces the franchise: Will they relocate to Los Angeles?
"Until we know what's going on, there's no reason to discuss it," coach Jeff Fisher said.
