49ers win meeting of Heisman QBs
SAN FRANCISCO — After two gutsy performances by their new starting quarterback, the 49ers think they've finally found the right Smith for the job.
Joe Nedney kicked a 29-yard field goal 5:22 into overtime, and Troy Smith passed for 356 yards in a victory over the Rams.
Smith has won both his starts. Sunday, he threw a go-ahead 16-yard touchdown to Michael Crabtree with 2:10 left in regulation, then led the winning drive in OT.
Ohio State's former Heisman Trophy winner is thriving in place of injured Alex Smith.
"When you're part of a team that has nothing but a winning tradition, you want to keep that going as a quarterback," Troy Smith said, overlooking a current seven-year absence from the playoffs.
He outplayed Rams rookie Sam Bradford in the NFL's first meeting of Heisman-winning quarterbacks since Carson Palmer and Vinny Testaverde in 2004.
