76ers topple Magic for sixth win on season

ORLANDO — Jahlil Okafor scored 20, Ish Smith had 13 points and 11 assists and the 76ers beat the Magic 96-87 on Wednesday night.

Hollis Thompson added 17 points and Isaiah Canaan scored 15 for Philadelphia, which has won two of three to get to six wins on the season.

Elfrid Payton led Orlando with 21 points and 10 assists. The Magic lost for the eighth time in nine games. Nikola Vucevic had 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Tobias Harris added 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Philadelphia led by 14 in the third quarter, but its advantage was trimmed to 85-81 on Aaron Gordon's three-point play with 4:43 remaining.

But Smith made a 15-footer, Okafor made a layup and Canaan added five points, and Orlando didn't challenged again.

The 76ers went 9-for-19 from 3-point range and shot 48.6 percent from the field overall.

Orlando's starters, who were so ineffective at the defensive end that coach Scott Skiles pulled all five of them early in the second half, turned things around briefly at the start of the fourth quarter, but couldn't get going on offensive. The 76ers missed eight of their first nine shots of the fourth, to go along with three turnovers. Okafor had five of the misses and two of the turnovers, but the Magic hit only 7 of 19 shots in the final quarter.

The Sixers recovered from a shaky start to lead 47-46 at halftime and took advantage of poor defense while increasing the advantage to 11 in the first five minutes of the second half.

Magic guard Victor Oladipo missed his second game with a sprained knee.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS: John Wall had 18 points and 10 assists as the host Wizards sent the shorthanded Heat to a sixth loss in seven games, 106-87. Miami guard Dwyane Wade was scratched with shoulder soreness. In the second quarter, center Hassan Whiteside sustained a strained left oblique and did not return. Down to nine players, Amare Stoudemire scored a season-high 11 in 21 minutes for Miami. ... Kevin Love had 17 points and 18 rebounds as the visiting Cavaliers rolled past the Nets 91-78.

AROUND THE LEAGUE: Mavericks leading scorer Dirk Nowitzki sat out against the Timberwolves because of fluid on the knee. It's not clear if he will miss more time. … Warriors guard Stephen Curry is still No. 1 in jersey sales and Knicks rookie Kristaps Porzingis is moving up in popularity, according to sales at nbastore.com from October through December. The Cavs' LeBron James and the Lakers' Kobe Bryant are second and third. Porzingis debuted at No. 4 and the Thunder's Kevin Durant was No. 5. … Pelicans shooting guard Eric Gordon is expected to be out 4-6 weeks after surgery on his fractured right ring finger.
