Jets to face Bucs without Forte

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Matt Forte has been waiting for the swelling in his surgically repaired right knee to subside.

Instead, it has only gotten worse.

The 31-year-old running back will sit out the Jets’ game at the Bucs on Sunday because of his ailing knee. He didn’t practice all week after having a season-high 77 yards rushing against the Bills last Thursday night.

"I’ve been playing with swelling in my knee for a while," Forte said Friday. "It just got to a point where it’s getting significantly worse. Obviously, coming from a Sunday game to a Thursday game, there’s less recovery time and it just got worse on me."

DOWN WITH TNF: Jermaine Kearse is no fan of Thursday night games. The Jets receiver echoed what has become a growing sentiment among players who think the league should get rid of short work weeks because they are detrimental to their health and safety. "You’re asking guys who play a high volume on one day and literally give it their all on that one day and ask them to recover and try to bounce back in a couple of days," said Kearse, a day after watching cornerback and former Seahawks teammate Richard Sherman suffer a season-ending Achilles tendon injury in a win over the Cardinals.

BENNETT SLAMS PACK: Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett claims the Packers, who waived him Wednesday nine weeks into a multiyear deal, tried to force him to play through a severe shoulder injury. Green Bay cut Bennett with a failure to disclose injury designation. In a series of Instagram posts, Bennett wrote that team doctor Patrick McKenzie examined him repeatedly and cleared him to play and the team cut him only when he decided to have surgery.

FINES: Bengals receiver A.J. Green was fined $42,541 by the league for fighting with Jaguars cornerback and former Seminole Jalen Ramsey last weekend. Ramsey was not fined.

CARDINALS: Left tackle D.J. Humphries and safety Tyvon Branch suffered season-ending injuries Thursday. Humphries, a former Gator, has an MCL injury and a dislocated kneecap. Branch was to have cartilage repair surgery and ACL surgery.

FALCONS: Receiver Julio Jones returned to practice after missing time with a sore ankle.

JAGUARS: Right tackle Jermey Parnell (knee) and guards Patrick Omameh (knee) and A.J. Cann (triceps), all starters, were listed as questionable.

TITANS: Tight end Delanie Walker is questionable with a bone bruise in his ankle.
