Anniversary of the day
Today, local hockey fans can wish the Tampa Bay Lightning a happy birthday. It was 20 years ago today — Dec. 6, 1990 — that the National Hockey League granted a conditional franchise to Phil Esposito and the Tampa Bay area. The city of Ottawa also was awarded a franchise. After some trouble putting together the finances, the Lightning finally began play during the 1992-93 NHL season.
