Florida State has requested and been granted an Oct. 18 date in front of the Division I Committee on Infractions involving its academic misconduct scandal.

"There's still an opportunity it could change," athletic director Randy Spetman said Tuesday afternoon.

President T.K. Wetherell asked the NCAA in mid June for that time slot, which is a Saturday and two days after the football team plays at N.C. State.

During the proceeding, the 10-member committee will review all the allegations, hearing from the school and NCAA enforcement staff. Afterward, the committee will convene privately and determine what, if any, findings should be made and what, if any, sanctions are appropriate. FSU proposed a number of self-imposed penalties, including scholarship losses and two years' probation.

TEBOW HONOR: Florida quarterback Tim Tebow received an ESPY nomination for best male college athlete. Also nominated: basketball players Tyler Hansbrough of North Carolina and Michael Beasley of Kansas State. The award show airs at 9 p.m. July 20 on ESPN. Fans determine the winners in all categories; online voting began Tuesday at espys.tv.

GEORGIA: Offensive linemen Justin Anderson and Trinton Sturdivant were jailed on charges of simple battery in Athens Monday. A woman filed a complaint that the players "did intentionally make physical contact of an insulting nature." The players' attorney denied the charges.

Kentucky: Coach Rich Brooks, 66, avoided injury Monday when a boat he was on capsized on the McKenzie River northeast of Springfield, Ore.

OBITUARY: John Pont, who guided Indiana to its only Rose Bowl appearance and also coached at Northwestern, Yale and Miami of Ohio, died Tuesday at his home in Oxford, Ohio. He was 80. Mr. Pont, who had cancer, coached the Hoosiers from 1965 to 1972. In 1967, IU lost to Southern Cal in the Rose Bowl. When Mr. Pont graduated from Miami of Ohio in 1951, he was the school's career leading rusher with 2,457 yards.

Howland gets deal

LOS ANGELES — UCLA basketball coach Ben Howland agreed to a new seven-year contract that keeps him among the nation's top five best-paid. The deal, which adds a year onto an agreement signed in October, runs through the 2014-15 season and includes $1.97-million for next season.

SEC: Football and men's basketball games for all 12 conference schools will be broadcast on XM Satellite Radio starting in the fall. The company announced it added Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Vanderbilt. The SEC and XM signed a five-year deal for seven schools starting last year. XM plans to carry every football game and most men's regular-season basketball games, and key women's basketball and baseball games.

It was UF's probation that made FSU of the 90's. Might this be just what it takes to elevate USF into 3rd or maybe even 2nd place in the state? What is for certain is T.K has made a mockery of this investigation which will lead to painful sanctions
