Autos: Carmichael's take on crashes

Crash and learn

Clearwater native Ricky Carmichael, on his transition from motocross glory to stock cars before his start in an ARCA race this weekend at Talladega Superspeedway:

"The thing about motorcycles is they are so much smaller so if someone makes a mistake, it is easier to get away from it, especially if you are side by side. Now if you are behind someone on a motorcycle, it (will) hurt more than likely. You know what, either one can be bad when you are racing side by side like that. I don't think there is any escape from that."

Numbers, numbers

Since NASCAR started compiling "loop data" in 2005, Jeff Gordon has a series-best driver rating of 96.9, an average running position of 13.8 (second best) and runs in the top 15 in 65.4 percent of laps (second best).
