Sprint Cup scouting report: Charlotte Motor Speedway

Sprint Cup scouting report

Charlotte Motor Speedway

What: Bank of America 500

When/where: 7:30 tonight, Concord, N.C.

TV: Ch. 28

The setup: Jeff Gordon's in a pretty good spot in the Chase for the Championship for a guy who, technically, didn't make the Chase. Though winless this season, the four-time Sprint Cup series champion has finished sixth or higher in three of the four Chase races. NASCAR made Gordon an unprecedented 13th entrant into the Chase after concluding that Michael Waltrip Racing had manipulated race results last month at Richmond to help Joey Logano — and, by extension, MWR driver Martin Truex — make the Chase at Gordon's expense (Truex was later booted). In recent months, Gordon has repeatedly talked of his team performing better on race day than in qualifying. "My team has to trust in me just like I have to trust in them. All we have is that communication back and forth," Gordon said Thursday after earning the pole for tonight's Bank of America 500.

RHP Alex Cobb hates to hear how he "battled through" or "grinded out" a start rather than just dominated, but that's kind of what he did Friday, allowing nine hits and a walk and being charged with two wild pitches but only three runs in earning his 12th win.
