Florida State Seminoles set marks for runs and winning margin in a 37-6 pounding of Ohio State Buckeyes

TALLAHASSEE — Stephen Cardullo set an NCAA tournament record with seven hits and Florida State set marks for runs and winning margin Sunday in a 37-6 pounding of Ohio State.

The Seminoles (45-16) set or tied 18 NCAA, school or postseason baseball records (see box below for partial listing) in advancing to the super regions.

"I can honestly say I've never seen anything like it," Seminoles coach Mike Martin said.

Jason Stidham, the region's most outstanding player, hit a two-run double as FSU scored eight in the first and cruised past the pitching-depleted Buckeyes (42-19), who trailed 32-0 in the fifth just hours after beating Georgia 13-6 to oust the Bulldogs.

"It was a great feeling," Cardullo said. "It's definitely true that hitting is contagious."

Friday, Ohio State lost its opener to Georgia 24-8.

GATORS ADVANCE: Former Tampa Alonso pitcher Alex Panteliodis had a career-high six strikeouts, and Florida scored five in the top of the first in a 16-5 victory over Miami in the Gainesville Region. UF (42-20) hosts Georgia Tech or Southern Miss in this week's super region. The Gators advanced out of a region that included Miami for the first time in 14 tries. This also marks the first time in 14 tries since 1990 that the Hurricanes (38-22) have not won when they played in a region in Florida. Tampa freshman Preston Tucker broke the school season RBI record in the first; he has 83. Earlier, UM eliminated Jacksonville 4-0.
