Alex Rodriguez flashes power in Tampa on rehab

TAMPA — Alex Rodriguez is getting his power swing back.

The Yankees third baseman, coming back from January hip surgery, hit a ball to the base of the centerfield fence and another on the warning track in left-center off a minor-league right-hander Monday as he continued taking simulated at-bats. In sessions late last week, Rodriguez primarily hit grounders mixed in with a couple of liners.

Rodriguez, who turns 38 next month, also had an extensive baserunning session and did sliding drills on a mat in the outfield, two key steps before starting a minor-league rehab assignment.

The Yankees have not said when Rodriguez will begin playing in games but are hoping for after the All-Star break.

SS Derek Jeter, recovering from a broken left ankle, took batting practice with Rodriguez and Eduardo Nunez.

The news wasn't so good on 1B Mark Teixeira, whose right wrist remained sore more than a week after a cortisone injection. "It's clearly not a good situation," GM Brian Cashman told the Star-Ledger. Season-ending surgery remains an option, Cashman said.

ATHLETICS: With a fifth starter not needed until July 5 thanks to three off days in the next eight days, rookie RHP Dan Straily was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.

GIANTS: Former Rays OF Randy Winn joined the coaching staff at Class A San Jose to see if he wants to pursue it. Winn, 39, retired in 2011. … 3B Pablo Sandoval, out since June 8 with a left foot strain, was activated from the disabled list. INF Nick Noonan was optioned to Triple-A Fresno.

INDIANS: RHP Carlos Carrasco was optioned to Triple-A Columbus, and LHP T.J. House was recalled from Columbus to join the bullpen.

NATIONALS: With RHP Dan Haren headed to the DL with an injured shoulder, RHP Taylor Jordan is expected to be called up from Double-A Harrisburg to replace him in the rotation. Jordan is 6-0 with a 0.73 ERA in seven starts at Harrisburg.

ORIOLES: RHP Freddy Garcia was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk, an assignment he has the right to refuse. Rookie RHP Kevin Gausman was recalled from Norfolk.
