Zambrano will miss start with tendinitis

CHICAGO — Ace Carlos Zambrano has right rotator cuff tendinitis and inflammation, an MRI exam confirmed Thursday, a potential obstacle for the Cubs.

Zambrano received a shot of anti-inflammatory medication and hopes to return to the rotation next week.

General manager Jim Hendry said Zambrano hopes to start throwing again Wednesday. If all goes well, Zambrano would start at Houston in the following series. Sean Marshall will start in Zambrano's place Sunday at Cincinnati.

"Hopefully he will be just missing this one start," Hendry said.

Four balls, yer out: Angels rookie 2B Sean Rodriguez struck out after he should have walked in the fourth inning against the Tigers' Aquilino Lopez. "Hey, I struck out on a 4-and-2 pitch," Rodriguez told the Orange County (Calif.) Register. Plate umpire Tim Welke lost track of the count. The scoreboard showed 2-and-2, but Welke signaled to change it to 1-and-2. "It's probably more my fault than his," Rodriguez said. "He (Welke) said, 'Hey, isn't it 1-and-2?' and (Tigers catcher) Brandon Inge said, 'I think so.' I just said, 'Yeah, I think it's 1-and-2.' " Rodriguez went to a full count, then swung and missed for strike three.

Angels: RHP Jered Weaver sliced the tips of his middle and ring fingers of his pitching hand on staples holding the upholstery while getting off the bench Tuesday at Detroit's Comerica Park. Weaver, who did not need stitches, will miss his start tonight but is set to face the Yankees on Monday.

Phillies: Third-base coach Steve Smith was suspended for two games, starting tonight, and fined because of an argument with umpires during a game in Chicago last week.

Obituary: Todd Cruz, an infielder with the 1983 world champion Orioles, died Tuesday while swimming at a Bullhead City, Ariz., apartment complex. He was 52. The cause of death is pending results of an autopsy conducted by the Mohave County Medical Examiner's Office.
