Bosox put Buchholz on DL

BOSTON — The Red Sox placed struggling RHP Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended left knee.

The move, retroactive to Tuesday, followed a bullpen session by Buchholz before Wednesday night's game against the Braves.

"We had a chance to sit down and talk to him before he went out on the field," manager John Farrell said before knowing the results of the session, "but we're going to be cautious. We don't want to put him at risk of suffering any other type of injury, whether that's to the knee or shows up elsewhere. We've got to be careful."

The Red Sox recalled RHP Alex Wilson from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill Buchholz's roster spot.

On Monday, Buchholz walked a career-high eight while allowing six runs in three-plus innings of an 8-6 win at Atlanta. Tuesday, Farrell said Buchholz continued pitching Monday after his left knee buckled.

Buchholz, an All-Star last season, is 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA in 10 starts.

MANNY BEING SORRY: Manny Ramirez apologized for his behavior while playing with the Red Sox in his first public appearance since being named a Cubs minor-league player-coach. Though Ramirez was a star on two World Series champions with Boston, he was often accused of lollygagging and had a physical altercation with traveling secretary Jack McCormick.

CRAWFORD TO DL: Dodgers and former Rays LF Carl Crawford went on the 15-day disabled list with a badly sprained left ankle. Los Angeles promoted Triple-A OF Jamie Romak to the majors for the first time.

SCOOTER RETURNED: Giants RF Hunter Pence has recovered his stolen scooter. The customized motor scooter that he rides a few blocks to every home game was returned to the Giants' clubhouse during the game against the Cubs.

NATS STAR IMPROVING: Nationals 3B Ryan Zimmerman is making progress in his recovery from a fractured right thumb, fielding groundballs and taking batting practice before a game against the Marlins. Also, minor-league LHP Matt Purke, a third-round pick in 2011, needs Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of the season.

BRAVES: 2B Tommy La Stella was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett.

D'BACKS: The team selected the contract of utility player Nick Evans from Triple-A Reno and optioned OF Alfredo Marte to the Aces.

INDIANS: All-Star 2B Jason Kipnis was activated from the 15-day disabled list after being sidelined since April 29 by a strained muscle in his right side.

MARINERS: LHP James Paxton, who was rehabbing from a strained lat, was shut down after an MRI exam revealed shoulder inflammation. … OF Xavier Nady signed a minor-league contract after being released by the Padres earlier this month.

RANGERS: RHP Yu Darvish, scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday because of neck stiffness, played catch and said he expects to make his next start Saturday. … LHP Joe Saunders was activated from the 15-day disabled list. Saunders left his only start this season on April 4 after getting hit in the left ankle with a line drive off the bat of the Rays' Evan Longoria.

YANKEES: 1B Mark Teixeira was out of the lineup for the third straight day because of soreness in his surgically repaired right wrist.
