Bosox put Buchholz on DL

BOSTON — The Red Sox placed struggling RHP Clay Buchholz on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended left knee.

The move, retroactive to Tuesday, followed a bullpen session by Buchholz before Wednesday night's game against the Braves.

"We had a chance to sit down and talk to him before he went out on the field," manager John Farrell said before knowing the results of the session, "but we're going to be cautious. We don't want to put him at risk of suffering any other type of injury, whether that's to the knee or shows up elsewhere. We've got to be careful."

The Red Sox recalled RHP Alex Wilson from Triple-A Pawtucket to fill Buchholz's roster spot.

On Monday, Buchholz walked a career-high eight while allowing six runs in three-plus innings of an 8-6 win at Atlanta. Tuesday, Farrell said Buchholz continued pitching Monday after his left knee buckled.

Buchholz, an All-Star last season, is 2-4 with a 7.02 ERA in 10 starts.

BRAVES: 2B Tommy La Stella was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett.

D'BACKS: The team selected the contract of utility player Nick Evans from Triple-A Reno and optioned OF Alfredo Marte to the Aces.

INDIANS: All-Star 2B Jason Kipnis was activated from the 15-day disabled list after being sidelined since April 29 by a strained muscle in his right side.

MARINERS: LHP James Paxton, who was rehabbing from a strained lat, was shut down after an MRI exam revealed shoulder inflammation. … OF Xavier Nady signed a minor-league contract after being released by the Padres earlier this month.

Saunders left his only start this season on April 4 after getting hit in the left ankle with a line drive off the bat of the Rays' Evan Longoria.
