NEW YORK — Major League Baseball suspended four players involved in Sunday's Pirates-Brewers brawl.
Milwaukee C Martin Maldonado was suspended five games and OF Carlos Gomez three. Pirates OF Travis Snider received a two-game penalty and C Russell Martin one game.
Maldonado began his suspension with Tuesday's game against the Padres. Gomez decided to appeal and was in his usual leadoff position. Manager Ron Roenicke said he thought a decision could take a couple of weeks.
"I'm appealing because it's not fair and I'm not the one that started the fight and I'm not the one that started throwing punches first," Gomez said Tuesday. "I'll appeal it and wait for the result."
Snider and Martin also plan to appeal and were penciled into the lineup for Tuesday night's game against the Reds.
CUBAN RULE: Two Florida lawmakers motivated by Dodgers OF Yasiel Puig's dangerous escape from Cuba are trying to change the way MLB treats Cuban players and are willing to tie state money for stadiums to the issue. Jose Felix Diaz and Matt Gaetz are filing an amendment to a stadium funding bill that would require the Marlins and Rays to demand baseball change its Cuban player policy if they want state money for stadium construction or renovations.
SURGERY LIKELY FOR NOVA: Yankees RHP Ivan Nova appears headed for Tommy John surgery after a second opinion confirmed a diagnosis of a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. LHP Vidal Nuno, who pitched five shutout innings against the Rays on Sunday, will join the rotation. Also, RH closer David Robertson was activated from the disabled list.
TWITTER OFF: A picture Matt Harvey tweeted of himself making an obscene gesture on his way into surgery caused such a stir that the injured Mets ace shut down his Twitter account. Harvey posted a photo that showed him raising his left middle finger — playfully, he said — as he was about to have Tommy John surgery six months ago. The Mets asked Harvey to take it down, and Harvey deleted his account.
DELAY FOR MINOR: Braves LHP Mike Minor's season debut was pushed back from Saturday so he can make a rehab start Friday in his recovery from tendinitis in his pitching shoulder.
