Rangers 1B Prince Fielder is expected to have neck surgery next week and miss the rest of the season.

Fielder has been out with a herniated disk in his neck, and surgery was recommended after a follow-up exam and another scan Thursday.

GM Jon Daniels said the team would get second opinion about surgery, but were "expecting that to be confirmed."

Daniels said a cervical fusion was tentatively scheduled for Tuesday. That operation has a typical recovery time of three to four months; the GM said he anticipated Fielder being fully recovered for spring training.

The Rangers have a majors-high 13 players on the disabled list. Fielder, who turned 30 this month, will become the 14th today.

Fielder had played in 547 consecutive games, then the longest active streak in the majors, before receiving a nerve root block injection Saturday to treat his neck. He had played all 162 games four of the past five seasons, and missed one game in 2010.

Before that, he hadn't missed a game since Sept. 14, 2010. The last time he had missed consecutive games was Aug. 24-25, 2007, while with Milwaukee.

boy out of hospital: An 8-year-old boy who was struck in the head by a foul ball at Atlanta's Turner Field on Tuesday was released from the hospital. He was hit by Milwaukee's Carlos Gomez's line drive. While the family requested privacy and boy's name was not released, the Braves said the boy called and thanked the players who visited him in the hospital and let the team "know that he's home and doing well."

dodgers release brawling catcher: Miguel Olivo was released by the Dodgers after his fight in the dugout with Triple-A Albuquerque teammate Alex Guerrero. The team announcement was a two-sentence statement that made no reference to the brawl Tuesday during which Olivo bit off part of Guerrero's left ear.

cubs: The team said it will push to erect more signs in the outfield than the city has approved. Owners of 15 rooftop venues across the street from Wrigley Field vowed to fight in court what they see as a threat to their views and livelihoods.

diamondbacks: Minor-leaguer Jon Griffin homered in five straight at-bats — four Wednesday and in the second inning Thursday. He walked in his second at-bat then grounded out in the sixth during the Southern League's Mobile BayBears' 6-5 loss to the Tennessee Smokies. The major-league record is four straight at-bats with a home run, accomplished many times and last done by Carlos Gonzalez in 2012.

indians: RHP Zach McAllister went on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain.

pirates: LHP Wandy Rodriguez was designated for assignmen, less than 24 hours after he gave up six runs in 12/3 innings against the Orioles. Rodriguez was 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in six starts. "We felt best served to cut ties because in my mind I'm thinking, 'You know what? I've seen guys of his ilk pitch backwards and recreate themselves.' … We didn't feel that was our best option," manager Clint Hurdle said. "He's healthy, his arm is healthy. He said it best, 'Sometimes you give everything you got and it's not good enough.' "

white sox: GM Rick Hahn is optimistic rookie slugger Jose Abreu, who went on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with left ankle tendinitis, will return when he's eligible.
