Unexpected guest of the day No. 1

Manager Joe Maddon goes back to the early 1980s with Reggie Jackson when, as an Angels minor-league coach, he got to throw him batting practice in spring training. But he certainly didn't expect Jackson to walk into his office Sunday morning, sit down and start talking about the tough time he'd had dealing with the death of Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. "It was interesting," Maddon said. "That kind of took me by surprise."

Unexpected guest of the day No. 2

Rays season-ticket holder and mega-fan Dick Vitale was on the field pregame — wearing a Yankees hat! He took some ribbing from the Rays but had a good explanation. Vitale, at left talking with Maddon, said he was at a game at the Trop 6-7 years ago and summoned to the Yankees clubhouse, where Steinbrenner gave him a cap. So he wore it Sunday in tribute. "I have the Yankees on my hat," Vitale said, "but my heart is with the Rays."

Quote of the day

"I guess I miss the point sometimes. I don't see it like everybody else. It's one game in July. You move it along to the next day."
