Eric Hinske greets Jonny Gomes at home after Gomes scored the game’s first run on Dioner Navarro’s two-out single during the second inning. Gomes, who scored three times and had two steals, had singled and stolen second.
Jonny Gomes, making an impact with his hustle in a rare start, steals third in the fourth inning
as Eric Hinske walks. Both runners scored on Jason Bartlett’s triple during the four-run inning.
ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays are reaching new heights on an almost daily basis.
After Monday's 7-1 win, they are six games over .500 for the first time in franchise history at 22-16, have the majors' best record (14-5) over the past three weeks, extended their winning streak to five and their major-league-best home streak to 10, are a half-game out of first place and are leading the AL wild-card race.
But there's another measure of their success that will never get old: beating the Yankees.
"Always, beating the Evil Empire is awesome," Jonny Gomes said. "They've been doing work on us for the last 10 years (a 115-58 advantage). … Anyone in the AL East, we'll take our wins. But beating those guys is always a little more fun."
Especially from their new perspective: the Rays' 3½ game advantage over the Yankees (19-20) is the largest they've ever had in their 10-plus seasons.
They did it all kinds of ways Monday. There was more strong pitching, with Matt Garza working seven shutout innings for his best start as a Ray, though needing 108 pitches.
"Garza was very good today," manager Joe Maddon said. "The ball was very much alive. It's not often you see the Yankees take those kind of swings against that fastball, so that told me the ball was moving a lot."
Garza, who scattered five hits, is 2-1 with a 1.37 ERA in three quality starts since his so-so return from the disabled list April 25 and said he's still improving: "It's almost there."
There was another sparkling show of defense, with second baseman Akinori Iwamura turning three double plays and making a running grab of a foul popup.
And there was the kind of all-in offense that has become the Ray way, with Gomes sparking three rallies (two singles, two steals, three runs); Dioner Navarro rapping three more singles to raise his average to .362; and No. 9 hitter Jason Bartlett getting the big hit, a two-run triple in the middle of their four-run fourth.
Within the win was another victory: They disposed quickly of known tormentor Andy Pettitte, who was 14-3, 3.62 against them overall and 8-1 at the Trop, beating him there for the first time since Sept. 16, 1998 — when rookie Evan Longoria was 12.
"The way they're pitching is outstanding," Yankees outfielder Johnny Damon said. "Their offense has always been pretty good. … You can never have enough good players. And it seems like they're stacked with them now."
About the only thing that wasn't good: a crowd of 13,932. Since the Yankees were last at the Trop, April 14-15, the Rays have gone from 6-8 to 22-16 and moved from fifth place to second in the AL East, yet they drew fewer fans — the April games, on a Monday and Tuesday, drew 18,872 and 20,923.
"It's a little disappointing right now," Maddon said. "I think we're playing a pretty good brand of baseball. But I also believe it's still school, it's a Monday night, I get all that. I've been through that before in other places. But I want the people to understand, our fan base, that it really does make a difference to us when they're out there and you hear, 'Let's go, Rays,' as opposed to 'Let's go, whomever.' "

I go to as many games as possible but, I will no longer pay to go see the Yankees or the Red Sox and their premium prices. I go to see the Rays and could care less whom they are playing. What a scam! Hey good teams coming let's jack up the prices.

We have lost and gained some of the best players in the game of baseball. Our coaching staff if right up there with the best. Lets support what we have now. Our blood and hearts are with the Ray's. Lets support our team win or loose. Play Ball

Personally, weekday games are tough for me, living and working in New Tampa. I have been to 6 games though, mostly weekend games.

Let's all calm down. Bottom line is that Rays fans need to support the team, which can be done in different ways. But what's a reasonable level of support? 5 games a year? 10? Personally I have already been to 6, with many more to follow.

Fan support? Why cause we won a couple? Who cares! The millions of dollars a year they make should motivate them to make the playoffs. I like Dwayne and Joe. I'd rather listen to them then a bunch of drunk idiots at the game who just bought a Ray tee

I'm sick of hearing about where are the fans. It was a Monday night & kids are still in school. I'm sure the crowds will get bigger as the summer nears. There is a big buzz around, Rays gear everywhere. Keep it up guys and those crowds will grow.

Just sad an pathetic excuses by Rays fans. The prime game excuse stinks because you can still go to the game for around $15 per. I am just as guilty about going, everyone said if they were good we would go, not that they are playing well..more exc!

I am an hour & a Half a way and try to get to a game every other week, The only thing I can say is, the Rays have got real good when our economy is realbad, could explain why crowds are low!! GO RAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!

and to Zach- The Rays do sell out. Twice this year already. That's proof that the fans are there, they just need to come more frequently. Sat. night for the Angles, we had over 25,000 people. 25k consistently would shatter our atendance records.

I agree Jeff. "Prime" games are a joke. If i were a Yanks/Sox fan, i would pay a little extra to see my team. Being a Rays fan, i feel the pinch going to a "prime" game. That's another cause for the lopsided fan support at "prime" games. Go Rays!

Roger, Roger: More fan support = more money to sign free agents and keep our young stars = even better team down the road. These guys are playing good ball - let's show up and tell 'em we appreciate their efforts!

Tampa people need to get over themselves, the Rays will NEVER move there, and if Tampa stopped calling the Yankees it's home team, we would have progress. I am glad I never have to venture very far into Tampa, but I do for the Lightning.

No more excuses people! Support this team or you will lose them! 13K a night won't cut it. Fan support could make all the difference between making the playoffs and finishing in 4th place around .500.

Maybe it's the 30-40% ticket price increase for "prime games" that keeps fans away. I love the Whitney Bank club, but a $110 ticket becomes $150 for the Yanks or Sox.

The reason the rays don't sellout: The Rays being in St. Pete, a sleepy retirement community, and the Trop the worst stadium in the league. If the Rays moved to their namesake, we wouldn't be having this discussion.

I work the games for my baseball league and its pretty pathetic to only have 13,000 fans. The Rays fans were rowdy and loud after the game but where are all these so called fans that wanted a winning team
by Ray F
May 13, 2008 11:22 AM
to David: Have you been to the Trop? Rays management has done nothing but turn it into a respectable venue to watch a game. New paint, restrooms, games for kids, touch tank, etc. Mgmnt has all but sent chauffeurs to fans' homes to get them there.

Funny thing. Every time I show up at the box office in my Red Sox shirt, they always take my money. My money seems welcome. Weird.

Ian - I've loved the Rays from day 1. Win or loose we have a heck of a team. Lost some good players but gained some too! Would be there but in financial crisis so..see on TV for now, or we would be there. Crawford, Gomes, Upton etc. GREAT PLAYERS!

I was at the game last night and for the first time in 10 years going to games, this is the first Rays/Yankees games I've been too where we overwhelmingly outnumbered the Yankee fans. AWESOME!!! Go Rays!

I don'tcare where they are at the all-star break. They're 5 games over .500 right now and 1/2 game out....let's get out and support the Rays! "Let's go Rays"
by Bob
May 13, 2008 11:16 AM
You're out of excuses Tampa Bay baseball fans; the Rays are a young, exciting team that's generating a lot of national "buzz." It's time to prove to MLB that they didn't make a mistake when they expanded to Tampa Bay. Support your team!
by Matt
May 13, 2008 11:14 AM
Ian if it takes a couple of good seasons to get a respectable crowd then I'd want the team to move. The players deserve much better than that. There is no way on earth the Storm should be outdrawing the Rays. Thats pathetic.
by Mike
May 13, 2008 11:14 AM
Hey Yankees! Where are all your fans?? Oh yeah, they jumped ship to the other bandwagon, Boston. And yes, I know the Rays aren't exactly selling out games but it takes a little more than a month of good baseball to turn around 10 years of really bad
by Bob
May 13, 2008 11:14 AM
This is a good team. After years of complaining about ownership not putting a decent team on the field we need to give them credit. Maddon is doing a terrific job and the players are responding in all facets of the game. Great job Rays, keep it up!

A win is always good. A win against the Yankees is GREAT! Glad to see Jonny Gomes contribute. He is like a secret weapon and I love his drive and passion. You gotta believe in this team. GO RAYS!!!

All right folks. Time to start getting out to the Trop! Summertime is just about here. The team has shown the committment - now it's time for the fans to do likewise. GO RAYS!

It is a little disappointing with the small crowds. Maybe this area just cannot support a major league team.
by Tim
May 13, 2008 11:13 AM
What a surprise, the Yankee bandwagon fan that has lived in Tampa/St Pete their whole life didn't show up? How about cheering for YOUR home team???
by David
May 13, 2008 10:47 AM
Part of the fan problem at the Trop is that Ray management show no respect for the stadium. It is hard to establish pride in a home field that the home team treats like a red headed stepchild. They don't treat the Trop as home, they treat it as gone.
by Al
May 13, 2008 10:47 AM
If they are still 6 games over .500 after the All-Star break, expect regular sell-outs. However, one good month after 10 putrid years isn't going to turn attendance around.
by John
May 13, 2008 10:47 AM
If the Yankees and Rays were battling for first place, the Trop would have been packed....once again, all the Yankee fans from Florida have been exposed for what they really are...front runners
