ST. PETERSBURG — The hows and whys will matter more, but, at least for the moment, the Rays can enjoy the when and where.

After beating the Yankees 2-1 in 11 innings on Tuesday for their sixth straight win, and with the Red Sox losing, the Rays stood alone atop the AL East, with a league-best 23-16 record.

Magic number: 122.

"It's real nice to be on the top," said Jonny Gomes, who scored the winning run, setting off a raucous celebration on the field and in the stands. "That's a goal of ours to make it to the playoffs and it's in our sights, granted it's still early."

As they have during much of their run in compiling a major-league-best 15-5 record over the past three weeks, the Rays won with stellar pitching, strong defense and clutch hitting, with Gabe Gross singling in Gomes with the winning run.

They had seven shutout innings from Edwin Jackson and two outs to go for a 1-0 win when Troy Percival allowed a tying homer to Hideki Matsui. But they held the Yankees, with J.P. Howell again stepping up, then rallied, much as they did Thursday in Toronto, to win it in extra innings.

And they beat Yankees closer supreme Mariano Rivera in the process. Cliff Floyd led off the 11th with a single, pinch-runner Gomes swiped second on a failed hit-and-run and a poor throw from catcher Jose Molina, and Gross singled up the middle for the first run Rivera allowed all season.

"You're looking for growth moments," Rays manager Joe Maddon said, "that's one right in front of your face tonight."

As much as the pitching, hitting and defense have been a part of the Rays success — they are seven games over .500 for the first time, have won 11 straight at home, have an intra-division best 17-11 record, are 4½ games ahead of the Yankees — so has confidence.

Percival swore he felt it as Matsui's ball was still rattling around the rightfield seats.

"I thought to myself, 'Bend but don't break,' because this team's got the heart to come back and do this, and I knew that," the 13-year veteran said. "It's early, but I do love the fact that the way we're doing it is by, I don't want to say outplaying everybody, but not giving in to anybody. …

"The way that we're fighting right now, it's something to look at and say this isn't a fluke what we're doing. We're a good team. We win close ballgames. Another team scores a bunch of runs we find a way to score more runs."

Jackson was dominant for the second time in five days, running his scoreless streak to 15 innings, and had nothing to show for it, as he was also the starter in the Toronto game.

"You feel terrible about it because he's a great kid," Percival said.

Jackson allowed only five hits and one walk, as impressive with how he pitched as what he did. "It's like he was throwing darts out there,'' Molina said.

The Rays gave Jackson a 1-0 lead in the fourth, when Eric Hinske singled in Carlos Pena off Yankees ace Chien-Ming Wang, and he survived several threats, helped by two more double plays.

Most severe was in the sixth when Derek Jeter tripled with one out, as Hinske made an ill-advised and poorly done dive for the sinking liner to right. But Jackson stranded Jeter, retiring Bobby Abreu on a groundout and Matsui on a popup.

When they won it in the 11th, the lively and larger crowd of 16,558 roared when the standings were flashed on the Trop scoreboard. And as much as Maddon tried to downplay the achievement — "I didn't realize that," he insisted at first — he acknowledged there was something significant about their standing.

"Of course there is based on our history and what we're doing right now," he said. "It's wonderful, it's great to be here, a big part of it is the confidence derived from it. Talk to our guys, they like this a lot. Obviously we all do."

Told ya so.
by Jason May 14, 2008 11:57 AM
They are up already like 60,000 fans from last year in a recession!! I am sure management is on cloud 9, but you wont here from them they will push for more
by Mike May 14, 2008 11:51 AM
You're right, Johnny. There is more to life than baseball. But luckily, I make more than enough money so that taxes, insurance, gas, and food price increases don't affect me. I'll gladly pay for the new stadium. I love having money. Poor saps ...
by Sean May 14, 2008 11:51 AM
Hey Johnny, get a life man...Any stadium would be better than that thing they play in now. You must be one of those rich people, in your highrise condo. That feels it will take away from your view. By the way GO RAYS !!!!!!!!!!!!!
by Amanda May 14, 2008 11:51 AM
I'm able to go to games because I live walking distance from the Trop. Some of my friends can't even afford the gas, nevermind tickets and food (college students). In this economy, you don't have to GO to games to be a fan. Support is support!
by Luu May 14, 2008 11:51 AM
First of all, congrats to the Rays for the wonderful win last night. My only regrats was that I was not at the Trop for the celebration. Secondly, John, go back to New York !!!!!!!!!
by Roger May 14, 2008 11:50 AM
Rise up Rays fans and support this team! The Oriloles nearly sold out last night and they aren't NEARLY as good. No excuses! Turn the Trop into a pit for visiting teams! THIS IS THE RAYS' YEAR!!!
by DIZ May 14, 2008 11:50 AM
Remember when the bandwagon Buc fans/everyone started to wear jerseys when they won the Super Bowl? While we true fans grinned and beared it from Game #1 in 1976. It will be the same with the Rays.
by Dave May 14, 2008 11:50 AM
Ah, "BOB": What "Real Manager" did you have in mind? Give Maddon some love - this team has made amazing progress. Of course not everyone can get to every game, but look for the deals and try to make it out when the team's in the spotlight-like now.
by Nick May 14, 2008 10:29 AM
Losers who only complain, get a life, seriously. If you can't afford things you want, work more or harder, quit blaming everything else. Also, quit whining about the new stadium. It will happen
by RayF May 14, 2008 10:29 AM
Tim: It's a rhetorical question. You don't need to make "statements" about not being able to go to the game. Don't go. Instead, come out on a weekend game and your kids can run the bases. 4 or more gets free parking. Look for the deals, Tim.
by Mike Creyton May 14, 2008 10:29 AM
Tommy. We aren't necessarily booing Jeter. We are booing to drown out the Yankee "fans" (who live here and not NY by the way) who try to cheer like crazy for him in our stadium. Its our house. Funny how bandwagon Yankee fans are. Where are they?
by David May 14, 2008 10:29 AM
Stands are full all over the country? That isn't what I'm seeing. It cost $100 plus to take a family of four to the Trop. Insulting fans who have to watch on TV isn't very classy. They are still part of the fan family and we're glad to have them.
by Tim May 14, 2008 9:56 AM
Hey RayF .. throw me a "C note" and I'll bring my family ..
by DIZ May 14, 2008 9:56 AM
I remember May '69 when the Mets swept the Braves in Atl. First time they were ever over .500 after years of futility. The NY newpapers went absolutely nuts. The whole world knows what happened to the Amazins after that. LET'S GO RAYS.
by Bob May 14, 2008 9:56 AM
Another great win for the Rays. Shields goes tonight, followed by Kaz on Thursday. Can't get much better than that. These guys are fun to watch, so get out and support your team!
by Ski May 14, 2008 9:55 AM
to Tommy: The fans aren't booing Derek Jeter to insult him, they are drowning out the Yankees fans. He is a class act. For a die hard Rays fan, i have nothing but respect for him. but until the yanks fans show the trop some respect, I'm booing.
by BOB May 14, 2008 9:55 AM
WHAT A WONDERDUL FEELING FOR THAT BUNCH OF TALENTED KIDS. HOPE MANAGEMENT REALIZES THAT IT IS NOW TIME FOR THE TO GET A REAL MANAGER SO THEY CAN, GASP, THINK ABOUT WORKING TOWARD THE PLAYOFFS. TO YOU NAYSAYERS REMEMBER THE PITCHING OF THE 69 METS.
by RayF May 14, 2008 9:35 AM
I was there last night, the night before, and the day before that... I'll be there tonight to watch Shields shut down the stankees! Will you???
by Tommy May 14, 2008 9:35 AM
Hey, Rays "fans." Please show some class & knowledge of baseball. DON'T "BOO" Derek Jeter!! He's one of the sport's classiest & decent players ever. Not to mention his talent & most likely a 1st round Hall of Famer. Booing him is an embarrassment.
by Don May 14, 2008 9:34 AM
AMAZING!!! SO GLAD WE GOT THE DEVIL OUT OF THE RAYS. IT'S SO MUCH FUN TO ROOT FOR OUR LITTLE RAYS. IT REMINDS ME OF WHEN I USED TO ROOT FOR THE BRAVES IN THE 80'S- ALWAYS SO WEAK. THEN IN '91 AND ON- WOW! THIS IS EVEN BETTER FOR A LOCAL.GO RAYS!!!
by Kevin May 14, 2008 9:34 AM
I'm happy for them but many of us remember Miami getting awarded our team,,cancelling the world series,,steroids,,can't help it but baseball has been dead to me for many years.
by max May 14, 2008 9:34 AM
Mike, apparantly a LOT of people can still afford to go to baseball games. All over the country baseball stadiums are full.I'm sorry if you can't afford to go, but alot of folks can afford and ARE going to baseball games. Bay area fans need to step up
by max May 14, 2008 9:34 AM
Great time to be a Rays fan. They're turning the corner. All bandwagon fans are WELCOME to join in. We'll take you!
by LARRY May 14, 2008 9:05 AM
LIVED IN ST. PETE TILL 1 YEAR AGO. I BELIEVE CREDIT HAS TO BE GIVEN TO NEW MANAGEMENT, MANAGER JOE MADDON & HIS STAFF AND SEVERAL KEY PLAYERS FOR THE TURNAROUND. THIS TEAM HAS HAD A SPARK SINCE THE DAY JOHNNY GOMES ARRIVED WITH HIS BELIEVE ATTITUDE.
by Michael May 14, 2008 9:02 AM
Another great win and another putrid crowd. They are winning now so what is your excuse now bay area fans?
by mike May 14, 2008 9:02 AM
Who can afford going to a baseball game?? Gas is $4/gallon, groceries up 30%, everything is up but salaries. Leisure activities, like ballgames, are the first to get cut out when times get hard.
by Murf May 14, 2008 9:02 AM
Now is the time to take our home field away from all the Tampa Bay area Yankee and Red Sox fans who show up in their regalia at our home games. Please take your act back north and stay. Let's go Tampa Bay Ray fans, show your colors & LET'S GO RAYS!!!
by Wade May 14, 2008 9:02 AM
The people will come, keep in mind there has been 9 years of losing. The tradition was losing. Now, we can build a tradition of winning and more people will come. Just give it time. You have to "un-learn" the losing mindset...
by Lee May 14, 2008 9:02 AM
The possibility of an all-Florida World Series is no longer a pipe-dream. These Rays are for real. The "Devil" should have exorcised from their name a long time ago(I grew up watching Saints beat the Havana Cubans and the Tampa Smokers in the FIL)
by Jason May 14, 2008 9:02 AM
Where are all of the "Fire Maddon" crowd? You seem to have gone away.
by Sween May 14, 2008 9:02 AM
They played with great heart! Love that confidence and can do attitude! Too bad the owners are so greedy.
by John May 14, 2008 9:02 AM
Congrats Rays! BTW Tuesday night in a bad economy with soaring gas & food prices- Hey Times, wanna guess why attendance isn't getting better?
by John May 14, 2008 9:01 AM
Pinellas can't support the Rays, so vote against them in Nov and release them to move to Hillsborough. The commute across the torn-up Gandy btwn Crosstown & I-275 is just too onerous on weeknights. I-4 at I-75 looking good, next to Hard Rock.
by DJ May 14, 2008 9:01 AM
I work at the trop and let me tell ya, when Gross hit that RBI the 15000 person crowd got louder than a sold out Bo Sox game. Everyone was excited. People were running through the halls, starting Rays chants and displaying that love for one another that can only be shared between fans. It felt great to finally get that feeling for the home team.
