BOSTON — The Red Sox are, like the Rays, known as one of the most aggressive baserunning teams in the majors.

But in a showdown between the AL East's top teams Wednesday night, Rays manager Joe Maddon said one Boston player in particular took a slide too far.

Josh Beckett delivered a strong pitching performance in a 5-1 win victory over Tampa Bay, handing the Rays their fifth straight loss at Fenway and dropping them from first place for the first time in 10 days. However, what likely caught the eyes of the national cable audience and 37,474 at Fenway Park — and drew the ire of Maddon — was what appeared to be a retaliatory play by Coco Crisp.

Maddon took issue with Crisp's hard slide during a stolen-base attempt in the eighth; Crisp's spikes appeared to hit Akinori Iwamura's feet and his elbow landed near Iwamura's midsection. As a result, Iwamura was knocked off the bag and a fuming Maddon came out of the dugout.

Crisp told reporters he was upset by a "little shady" play in the sixth by Rays shortstop Jason Bartlett, whom he said dropped his knee down while Crisp dove headfirst into second, jamming Crisp's left thumb. Crisp said he warned Bartlett that he would "show him how I felt about it" if he got on base again. But when asked if he was intending to hurt Iwamura, Crisp replied, "If I was intending to injure him, I wouldn't have slid at all."

Bartlett declined to comment.

"I was not pleased with the slide," Maddon said. "I totally felt there was intent to hurt our middle infielder, and that's what I was upset with. … There's no place for that when you intentionally try to hurt somebody."

Overall, Maddon was pleased with the Rays' (35-24) effort, including the pitching performance of Edwin Jackson. The hard-throwing right-hander retired his first six batters. He was off-and-on during his five-inning stint, giving up four runs and hurting himself with an error and wild pitch. It was the fifth straight time this season a Rays starter couldn't finish six innings at Fenway (all losses).

The Red Sox, who won their 12th straight home game, did most of their damage in a three-run third. Jackson committed a throwing error when he tried to pick off Jacoby Ellsbury at first. Dustin Pedroia made Jackson pay with an RBI double, and Manny Ramirez added an RBI single.

The Rays' offensive spark came from Eric Hinske, who was filling in at first base for the injured Carlos Pena, put on the 15-day disabled list in the afternoon with a broken finger. Hinske doubled and stole third in the second before getting stranded, and singled in a run in the fourth.

Other than that, Rays hitters were quiet, striking out 10 times. B.J. Upton argued a called third strike and was ejected in the eighth. Upton tossed his helmet in frustration, which summarized the night's events.

"Standing (up) for your team, your players and what's right," Maddon said of his reaction to Crisp's slide. "There's right and there's wrong and that was wrong. It was very simple to me."

Sven shut up. You are one of the morons that belong in that Red Sox creepy nation. All the Red Sox can kiss my you know what. Coco Crisp and the rest of that can rot in hell. I can't stand Coco,Pedroia,Ellsbury,Youkilis and Ramirez. Don't like them.

Attacked by Coco? Come on its the AL East for crying out loud. At least when the Rays lose tonight it wont be as late. Go Sox

I agree with Lori. Upton does need a major attitude adjustment. That guy lolly gags like he is a 12 time All Star. BJ isn't as good as Justin but he thinks he's Willie Mays. Trade him while he still has some value!

Good to see the devil rays are finally competing in the division and the yankees are in last place. I still dont see the Rays in it for the long haul but they have talent. Bartlett definately blocked the bag which is a quick way to break a hand/fing.

Kind of interesting that we seem to be getting injuries while playing this ball club. Pena index finger. Aki gets attacked by crisp.I wonder if Crawford's knee is doing better.

Good God. So they lost some games to the World Series Champion. Go away Nathan.

So we need a shut out to win . . . great. Are there any hitters on this team? We need a Ozzy Guienne type blow up because it seems that nobody cares that we hit like girls.

Look out Mr. Crisp. I'd like to see a Shields' high heater to the ear hole tonight. Get Gomes ready for a scrum.

OK the bully has knocked the Rays down again. Don't dwell on it. Time to get up off the deck and get back in the game. LET'S GO RAYS!!!
by JeffC Jun 5, 2008 12:50 PM
Nathan, what did you tell us about? The Rays are still in playoff contention, by no means out of the AL East Race, and have PLENTY of young talent coming in the system, in addition to what's already in place.

This 9 games road trip will tell a lot about this team
by sevenyearhawk Jun 5, 2008 12:50 PM
The Rays are playing the defending champ on their home turf at one of the most historic venues in all of sport ... and they've got injuries. Don't hurt yourself jumping off the bandwagon, buddy!
by Mike Jun 5, 2008 12:50 PM
Wow Nate, you're quite the optimist. Rays are still 11 GAMES OVER .500!!!! Sox rarely lose at home. Give the boys a break.

I am sick of all you negative people. I can not imagine your attitude toward your personal life. I am sure you are one of those people that complain about everything. Keep your negative comments to yourself. Keep believing REAL FANS Go Rays
by David Jun 5, 2008 12:50 PM
Attaboy Nathan, I hope your support for the other people in your life that you believe in is this enduring.
by max Jun 5, 2008 12:49 PM
Tough night. Our guys have got to start getting the bats off their shoulders and swinging. I'm telling you, the success of this team will be determined at the plate, not the mound. We'll have the pitching to keep us close. Can we score runs?
by lori Jun 5, 2008 12:49 PM
BJ has an attitude problem. He always takes pitches that are to close to take with 2 strikes. Swing the bat and stop complaining.
by Nathan Jun 5, 2008 10:04 AM
I hate to say I told you so, but, well, I TOLD YOU SO! Of course, I am really the stupid one for actually believing this time. Fun while it lasted. Let's hope OKCity or Portland embrace the 'lovable loser' tag.
