Rays needed to wait on revenge against Crisp

BOSTON — Perhaps the Rays made their point. On the other hand, they also lost their game.

Pardon me for asking, but isn't that supposed to be the important part?

Yep, the Rays showed those infernal Red Sox that they weren't going to take any guff. On the other hand, they also gave away their best shot at retaking first place.

Forgive me for wondering, but isn't that the thing that is supposed to matter?

That's why Thursday night's fight seemed like such a losing proposition for the Rays. Somehow, they forgot what they were supposed to be fighting for, and before you knew it, they were once again on their way to being knocked out in Fenway.

Look, I have nothing against baseball brawls in general. They happen. Orchestrated properly, they can be an absolutely entertaining way to watch players compare their flexed biceps. Also, it is hard to criticize the Rays players for being so eager to stick up for one another. And, yes, it is true that the increasingly annoying Coco Crisp makes a perfectly lovely target while at bat.

Still, this was not the time.

Furthermore, this was not the place.

This game was about first place, remember? This was about the Rays trying to salvage a game in the torture chamber called Fenway Park. This was about Tampa Bay pitcher James Shields proving that he could help stop his team from sliding further away from the momentum it had built for the first two months of the season.

Ask yourself: Was leaving a bruise on Crisp's leg more important than all of that?

Oh, somewhere down the line, the Rays were going to go after Crisp. For 100 years, baseball has been played that way, and everyone, including Crisp, knows it. After the way Crisp had taken out Tampa Bay second baseman Aki Iwamura the night before, everyone who has ever gripped a bat knew that, eventually, the Rays would take a shot at getting even. Maybe two.

But in the second inning of a game this size? How smart is that? Why not wait until the eighth inning of a game that has already been decided? Why not wait until the next time the teams played? What not drive Coco cuckoo from the waiting for revenge to be served cold?

Instead, Shields plunked Crisp right away, and Crisp charged the mound, and suddenly, YouTube had itself a brand new fight scene.

And just like that, the Rays' chances of winning were done.

"I'm all about protecting my players," Shields said. "What he did yesterday was absolutely a dirty play and bush league. If I've got to get out in the second inning, I've got to get out."

And the idea of biding one's time until a later moment?

"I thought I should set the precedence right away," Shields said.

When the brawl was over, the umpires ejected Crisp, Shields and Jonny Gomes. Ask yourself this: In what world would you ever trade Shields and Gomes for Coco Crisp?

Put it this way: Getting those two out of the lineup is the most damage that Crisp could possibly do to the Rays. In hindsight, that might be the worst realization of all: The Rays were rope-a-doped by Coco Crisp.

It could have been worse. Did you see the roundhouse right Shields threw at Crisp. Yeah, Crisp was indeed lucky that Shields missed. Given the fragile state of pitchers' hands, however, Shields is also lucky that Shields missed. A broken hand certainly wouldn't have done his teammates any good.

It was an ugly fight, even by brawl standards. Shields was body slammed by Boston coach DeMarlo Hale. Crisp accused Carl Crawford of pulling his hair. Gomes had a Shelly Duncan flashback.

The worst of it is yet to come. Soon, the suspensions will come down from the commissioner's office. This fight didn't just hurt the Rays on Thursday; it will hurt them for games to come.

For the record, none of the Rays had a problem with Shields throwing at Crisp at the earliest opportunity. The general opinion seemed to be that quick retaliation was the best of all possible kinds.

"It's one of those things that baseball players do," manager Joe Maddon said. "When you think one of your guys has been unfairly, wrongly attacked, the natural tendency is to protect one of your own."

Again, Shields' heart was in the right place. After all, one of the reasons this team is so much better than past Rays teams is the chemistry in the clubhouse. Who knows? If the Rays believe this will deepen their bond, perhaps it will.

However, the Rays have done a pretty fair job of feuding with the Red Sox for most of their existence, and it hasn't done them a lot of good in the past. We have seen Gerald Williams vs. Pedro Martinez and Ryan Rupe vs. Trot Nixon and Scott Kazmir vs. Manny Ramirez and Lou Piniella vs. Curt Schilling. We have seen hit batters and cleared benches and puffed-out chests. And it has never really altered the standings.

A pitcher the quality of Shields, however, makes all the difference in the world. The longer he is on the mound, the better his team's chances are of winning.

Excuse me for saying so, but on Thursday night, that should have been the point.

I love the heart and spirit the Rays have. Yes their youth and raw talent are showing and they have a lot to experience before becoming a playoff team. But I love these guys and know down the road they will be a force in this league. GO RAYS!!!
by Rakiura Jun 6, 2008 4:06 PM
Crisp outsmarted the Rays, plain and simple. The Rays are now on a 3 game slide and can look forward to losing Gomes and Crawford for 5+ games for their eagerness, you only lost 1 now, you could lose alot more. The have the talent... not yet smarts
by Craig Jun 6, 2008 4:06 PM
Wow the barely-literate Chowdah fans sure have their panties in a wad over this ha ha I love it.. GO RAYS
by biteme Jun 6, 2008 4:05 PM
Who cares if Coco Crispies is a boxer. This isn't a boxing match. Gomes would pile drive the little guy straight into next month. Earlier posts had it right. Coco - just take your base like a man.
by Rich Jun 6, 2008 4:05 PM
I've never seen any position player outside of a catcher block a base with their leg or body. Crisp had every right to be upset with Bartlett/Cheater. As for the brawl. Navarro pretty much had Crisp wrapped up/tackled. Gomes sucker punched Crisp.
by fan Jun 6, 2008 4:05 PM
Who cares about Coco they lost and are no longer in first place! Most likely for good! Win now not later! Now they wil be short players. Gomes is a punk!
by Nick Jun 6, 2008 4:05 PM
This was absolutely the right move by Shields. The season is as long as we are young and energized. Its a close race that the Rays will win. The Sox and Yankees try to push us around... but now they know we aren't the last place Rays anymore.
by evan Jun 6, 2008 4:04 PM
"And you don't understand baseball. Pitching and hitting wins games, not gelling" HAHAHA, are you kidding me. Haven't you ever heard of "clubhouse distractions"? The exact reason why people get rid of distractions has to do with chemistry.
by Dan Jun 6, 2008 4:04 PM
Nate is right, the slide Crisp made into Aki was hard, but not dirty, and YES probably as a response to Bartlett dropping his knee on Crisp's head first slide earlier. It was the GANGLIKE attack by the Rays that was classless.
by Sim Jun 6, 2008 4:04 PM
The Rays absolutely did the right thing and Shelton is way off. Winning a game is not this teams goal. Winning a championship is. They took a big step towards that goal in defeat yesterday. Shelton doesnt get it.
by kristin Jun 6, 2008 4:02 PM
Go Rays! Crisp deserved what he got.
by Dan Jun 6, 2008 4:02 PM
I am a Redsox fan, and even I can't understand why he charged the mound. He knew it was coming, no surprise there at all. I understand why Coco slid into 2nd base the way he did too. The beaning should have been the end of it and Coco knows this.
by Chris Jun 6, 2008 4:02 PM
Shields didn't really have his stuff last night so I have no problem with him doing what he did. Playing at Boston has always been a chore for the Rays so maybe this will help in the long run... but it can't hurt. Gnomes is the man.
by Jimbo Jun 6, 2008 4:02 PM
I've played ball...and I'm glad some of you posting were never playing with me. This is fundamental 'Team' stuff we're talking about. I'd rather 1 1/2 game back defending yourself than 1/2 game up in June losing respect. Plenty of time.
by jomo Jun 6, 2008 4:02 PM
Why would the RAYS respect the RED SOX they went 85 years without winning a WORLD SERIES while the YANKEES won 26 WORLD SERIES during that time -- Rays dont like the YANKEES but respect them .. RED SOX well you do the math.
by Rich Jun 6, 2008 12:53 PM
Guess the Rays haven't grown all the way up yet. So now both Gomes and Crawford can look forward to plunkings in future Red Sox games.
by mark Jun 6, 2008 12:53 PM
"Shelton, you just don't get locker rooms. These are the times when teams begin to gel. Like it or not." And you don't understand baseball. Pitching and hitting wins games, not gelling. It didn't do anything to team unity, it was just a loss.
by Andy Jun 6, 2008 12:53 PM
Do you have children? Discipline is most effective if delivered in a clear and timely manner. Besides, if they wait, the risk of losing the opportunity (Crisp injury?) increases.
by Gene Jun 6, 2008 12:53 PM
I am on the side of the recent posts. There are over 100 games left, we are only 1.5 games out still. More to be gained by players knowing they have each other's backs. It was the right time and place. JG needs some discipline though!
by dave Jun 6, 2008 12:53 PM
Hey Lin, Do you really think the Rays will make it to Oct??? You got to be kdding me!!!
by Nate Jun 6, 2008 12:52 PM
The rough slide by Crisp on Wednesday is arguably justified, we see it all the time in baseball. You block a base path or a base for a runner, you're gonna get steam rolled. Sure it was rough but not as blatant as everyone's making it out to be.
by Mark Jun 6, 2008 12:52 PM
Red Sox fans are the most pahetic in all of sports. The vast majority have been fans since way back in... 2004 when they won the world series. When they show up to our more then adequate stadium not only are they obnoxious root for both sides.
by dave Jun 6, 2008 12:31 PM
Why don't the Rays worry about selling some tickets at home? Its sad that the only time they have anyone their is when Boston or NY comes into town. They should be worried about that instead trying to prove a point. Gomes is nothing but trouble.
by jmoo Jun 6, 2008 12:30 PM
RED SOX just win the next 15 world series and you will almost catch the YANKEES ..Rays still got 75 years to play with untill they stink as bad as the RED SOX did .
by Tuck Jun 6, 2008 12:30 PM
Shields let Aki know that he has his back. The team will be better for it in the long run. Maddon could have started a reliever just to bean Coco, then brought Shields in after the fight. That was really the only other acceptable option.
by Dan Jun 6, 2008 12:30 PM
Shields may be the lucky one...Coco's dad was a pro boxer, and Coco was an undefeated Golden Gloves boxer in his youth
by No Rose-Colored-Glasses Jun 6, 2008 12:30 PM
No wonder the state of FL could not figure out how to vote in 2000...all of you supporting the Rays timing on this are absolutely brainless...win games THEN extract your revenge!
by James Jun 6, 2008 12:30 PM
It was the wrong time for revenge. The best way to hurt the Red Sox is in the standings. The Rays are willing to risk injuring quality players over some punk baseball gansta wannabe like Crisp? He lost his job to a better outfielder last year!
by Matt Jun 6, 2008 12:30 PM
Shields was more than stupid, he was selfish. His ejection not only cost the Rays their best chance to win last night, but wore out the bullpen for the next few days trying to cover his innings. You go after a back-up outfielder in the 8th or 9th.
by Josh Jun 6, 2008 12:30 PM
The game before Crisp made a big deal of saying, "don't come after my teammates." So basically instead of letting that pitch go (after all, it was only on his thigh)he willingly involved all his teammates by starting a brawl? He's crazy
by Jeff Jun 6, 2008 12:30 PM
Shields didn't throw at his head, he hit him in the leg, Coco-Moron should have just taken first. Not the Rays fault that he is an idiot, but they sure don't have to take it, and they didn't. Crawford could have charged the mouund too but he didn't.
by Mike Jun 6, 2008 12:29 PM
Seriously..this was the right time to do this the rays had absolutely nothing to lose in the series except first place in JUNE and they are only out 1.5 games who cares. Its the first week of june we have the better part of 4 months to regain first.
by Dennis Jun 6, 2008 12:29 PM
You couldnt be more wrong here. You HAVE to respond at the first oppurtunity or not at all. Shields absolutely did the right thing by throwing at Crisp. If it would have been at his head I would understand Crisp's response. Theres still 3 months left
by Mark Jun 6, 2008 12:28 PM
First, I want to say that there seems to be a few different "Mark"s here... Anyway, after hearing Coco Puff talk during postgame, I wish he would have more than just a few scratches on his face. He's a punk, and doesn't deserve his paycheck.
by Dave Jun 6, 2008 12:11 PM
I agree.. I great article. I Rays are finally earning some respect in baseball and they pull something like that. They should focus on winning. This just shows there lack of professionalism and class.
