Quote of the day

"It's very weird. I don't even know how to explain how weird it is."

Cliff Floyd on Anthrocon, a convention of furries — people who dress like humanized animals — that will be in Pittsburgh this weekend. He's been to the city twice during the event with the Mets. Number of the day

27 Rays runs in the series. Sweet 16

The Rays are the seventh team in modern history (since 1900) to get 16 or more games over .500 after finishing the previous season with the worst record in the majors.

The dish …

Tonight: Rays at Pirates

When/where: 7:05, PNC Park, Pittsburgh

TV/radio: Ch. 66; 1250-AM, 680-AM (Spanish)

Probable pitchers: Rays — LHP Scott Kazmir (6-3, 2.03); Pirates — RHP Jimmy Barthmaier (0-0, 0.00)

Rays tickets: $9-210, available at Tropicana Field box office (no service charge), by phone (888-326-7297), all Ticketmaster outlets, and on raysbaseball.com; $2 surcharge for purchases within five hours of that day's game.

Rays info: 1-888-326-7297 (FAN-RAYS)

Watch for

Jimmy jitters: Jimmy Barthmaier — a 6-foot-5, 240-pound, 24-year-old — will make his major-league debut; he hadn't pitched above Double A until last month and was 2-1, 2.84 at Triple-A Indianapolis.

Special K: Rays starter Scott Kazmir, winless in his last three starts, was last in Pittsburgh for the 2006 All-Star Game; before that was a June 2005 start in which he allowed a career-worst nine runs in 4 2/3 innings.

Scouting reports: Pirates Jason Bay and Xavier Nady are right-handed hitting outfielders the Rays could have trade interest in.

Oh yeah, we've got Shields, Garza and Kazmir on the hill for Boston? I'm excited.
