Yankees catcher Jose Molina leaps on Bobby Abreu after Abreu drove in the winner with a one-out double in the 10th.

NEW YORK — The Rays swear there's nothing to worry about, no cause for concern that they've lost three in a row, no reason to panic that their AL East lead is down to a mere two games.

They have four days before the All-Star break to prove it.

The Rays left for Cleveland after Wednesday's 2-1 10-inning loss to the Yankees, insisting it was just the third of three tough games that didn't end well and not the start of something worse.

"There's no concern, it's not time to be in any state of emergency by far," starter Edwin Jackson said. "We just have to go out and rebound this next series."

But there was a concern raised by veteran Cliff Floyd, who said it is vital his less experienced teammates understand the importance of the four-game series that starts tonight against the last-place Indians.

"The one thing you want to be careful of as a young team is going into the break looking at the break before the break is here," Floyd said.

"We've got to go to Cleveland and step it up. That's it pretty much. The break is in four days, and let's make it in four days instead of making it tomorrow. … We have to play like it's not here yet and keep our composure and know we've still got four games left, and we can make a quick swing and go into the break looking good."

Manager Joe Maddon expects they will, just as they rebounded from sweeps at Boston this season, and sees no reason to do anything different.

"There's nothing to change," he said. "We've been playing great. We're just coming off a seven-game winning streak, and we lose three pretty tough games. That's going to happen."

There was some question if the Rays (55-35) would be tripped up by the stage, or the supposed stakes, of the two-game series with the Yankees, who moved within 6½ games.

But the problems were more a continuation of a lack of offense, as they scored once in 19 innings, and the inability to foil Yankee veterans in key situations.

Tuesday, they were shut down by Andy Pettitte and finished off by Derek Jeter. Wednesday, it was Jeter drawing an eight-pitch walk off Grant Balfour with one out in the 10th, and Bobby Abreu fouling off four pitches before doubling in the winner.

After Jackson's solid start and Carlos Pena's sixth-inning tying homer, Balfour had rescued the Rays in the ninth. A walk and a bunt (off J.P. Howell) and a stolen base put the winning run on third with one out, but Balfour got a strikeout and a popup.

He couldn't pull it off again in the 10th, more "annoyed" at himself over walking Jeter than Abreu hitting what he felt was a good changeup, ending his nine-game scoreless streak.

As the Rays headed out, they insisted on looking ahead.

But not too far.

"It's going to show how good we are, to come back after losing three games and put an end to that," Balfour said. "To come out and win four games before the All-Star break, that'd be nice."

Anyone still say no slump ? Pathetic display last night. Letting a minor league team score double digits I'm concerned. Yes great season so far , now pull your heads out !
by Fred Jul 11, 2008 5:52 PM
Maddon need to change the batting order. The way Upton stands there and takes third strikes he needs to be batting in the 8 or 9 spot not third. He needs to Stand closer the the plate. They pitch him on the outside and he stand there looking.
by Mitch Jul 11, 2008 9:36 AM
Didn't the Sox loose 4 or 5 straight games? We swept them and they NY beat up on them, now they are winning and knocking at our heels, Don't be fair weather fans and have some faith! We owe them that at least!
by David Jul 10, 2008 10:13 PM
It is a sad situation. The Rays were so hot. Now they are looking so bad after 4 straight losses. I hope they come back. Maybe they just need to get this behind them. Reminds me of so many years of supporting the Cubs for years and years.
by John Jul 10, 2008 8:56 PM
Time to get Bay (or Nady) from PGH and then put Gomes on waivers. Everyone loves Jonny, but he made his own bed and now he has to lie in it.
by John Jul 10, 2008 8:55 PM
I'd like to see Upton back at leadoff. Let's not loss 3 of 4 to Indians before we tweek the lineup.
by sevenyearhawk Jul 10, 2008 8:54 PM
From the way the Yankees were celebrating ... Yeah, they were whooping up in a 12-11 win against the Royals earlier this summer. ACT LIKE YOU BEEN THERE, PUNKS! (that's what their jerk fans keep telling us!)
by realist Jul 10, 2008 8:43 PM
The sky isn't falling but... For the Rays to say "there's no concern" is wrong. You should be concerned every time you loose. You had a chance to bury the Yankess and didn't. How are you going to feel when you end up 1 game out of contention ?
by Paul Jul 10, 2008 8:35 PM
Hey Joe! Time to shake up the lineup a little. Upton should be your lead-off hitter - .391 OBP, 9th in the AL!
by Velma Jul 10, 2008 8:34 PM
With Ponson (loser, washup, O's retread) pitching, I was counting on dining on some delicious Dunkin Donuts but no . . the Rays hitters stunk. I'd make Jonny Gomes a side mascot to Raymond and put Aybar out there -- Hey, I'd love Rocco in RF!
by Ryan Jul 10, 2008 8:34 PM
That young pitching staff won't hold up under 2nd half pressure. Less innings from them lead to more from the pen. Look for leaks there. Sorry "fans", the Rays ain't gonna pull this off. GO YANKEES
by Rays2 Jul 10, 2008 8:26 PM
The same people rooting for the rays to lose are the sbrainwashed by POWW. You don't like baseball, you dont want a new stadium on "your waterfront", you dont like Rick Baker. Get over it. Only the rays winning makes me happier than you being mad.
by SG - OBU Jul 10, 2008 8:25 PM
Jeff, I can't agree more. The Rays do need another right handed power bat in their lineup. They do not do well aginst left handed pitchers with their left handed heavy hiting team. Management needs to address this or we will not make the playoffs!
by Dave Jul 10, 2008 7:59 PM
Sorry Ray fans, the sweep of the Sox gave you a false sense of how good this team is. The Sox gave away at least 2 of those games, and the Yanks showed what happens when you play a good team.
by Steve Jul 10, 2008 7:53 PM
Pitiful, those of you crying it's over. They took 3 of 4 from K.C. & lost 2 of the 3 in extra innings. "Rays implosion" or "beginning of the end"..Go jump on you Cubs or Sox bandwagon and shut up. The Bucs turned the corner too at one time..Remember?
by skp Jul 10, 2008 7:48 PM
didn't boston lose 5 or 6 in a row, including the sweep in tampa? the best teams lose a few, just stay competitive and make a statement by winning tonight, boys...and please, less jonny gomes.
by darryl Jul 10, 2008 5:48 PM
Dennis i would be a Little concern.the rays have always started there seasons well.not as well as this year, but they never have finished well at all after there breaks.its how you finish.not how you start.
by Dennis Jul 10, 2008 2:22 PM
I knew this would appear in the newspaper today, the dumbest column ever, OH MY A 3 GAME LOSING STREAK! This was a waste of space, what next, trade rumors about every player who is not hitting? I think they still are in 1st place.
by Gene Jul 10, 2008 2:21 PM
I am pleased that the majority of posters here have figured out that losing 3 after winning 7, and still having the best record in baseball is not the time to jump ship. Go Rays
by nick Jul 10, 2008 2:05 PM
You know your a good team when people make a big deal about a 3 game losing streak. No worries. This is part of the season. We do need a right fielding bat though. This will be a fight to the end. Go Rays.
by Jimbo Jul 10, 2008 10:59 AM
End the "sky is falling" fair-weather mentality! We've been swept TWICE by Boston this year, yet we're still THE BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL! These things happen to everyone! Support your team through thick and thin, or don't support AT ALL!
by David Jul 10, 2008 10:38 AM
From the way the Yankees were celebrating it looked like they had some real concern in their ability to beat the Rays. What a difference a year makes. Go Rays!
by Dave Jul 10, 2008 10:38 AM
The beginning of the end, sorry
by Rocky Jul 10, 2008 9:59 AM
Let's see the Rays lose 3 in a row and...still have the best record in the league on July 10. This team is for REAL and they will continue to win. GO RAYS...support your team Tampa Bay. Vote for LONGORIA...
by JEff Jul 10, 2008 9:59 AM
This is a very big deal. The Rays need a right handed power bat. Nady or Bay from Pit would do nicely. Rays please get a bat, or the playoffs will not be a possibility for this team.
by Karl Jul 10, 2008 9:35 AM
DAY THREE of the RAY IMPLOSION.
by bandwagon Jul 10, 2008 9:35 AM
Slump. Three consecutive losses to two different teams = slump. A mini slump but a slump all the same. Let us see what the Cleveland series brings. Have they finally let the hype go to their heads ?
by Don Jul 10, 2008 9:35 AM
What we are witnessing is what one must expect during the course of a long season. Every team has its down time and you just have to get through it. What is troubling tho is the signs of some miscontent and slopply play. Memo to CC. This is TEAM!
by CharlieRay Jul 10, 2008 9:35 AM
OK! It's now push time. Everyone click on and vote as many times as you can. Let's show them that we are true to our team the Rays. Click or Copy & past to vote. Send to your friends http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/all_star/y2008/fv/ballot.html
by MrTee Jul 10, 2008 9:35 AM
No big deal. Every team in the league hits slumps or bumps. Just last week Boston had lost 7 of 9 games and they bounced back just fine. Its just a minor speed bump.
by Mike Jul 10, 2008 9:35 AM
Pitching and defense is still looking solid. But, we have got to perform at the plate or we're not going to last into October.
by 2Early2Panic Jul 10, 2008 9:35 AM
We need to split in Cleveland, but really should take 3 of 4.
by fred Jul 10, 2008 9:35 AM
Hey, Rays, whatever happened to taking pitches? Ponson would have walked you home yesterday and you let Pettit off the hook early. Playing smart is what you got you 5 games up. Playing dumb is what got you where you've been for 11 years.
by Rob Jul 10, 2008 9:35 AM
Over the course of a 162 game season, there are going to be peaks and valleys. The Rays had a 7-game winning streak (highest peak this year) and are struggling. It's not a big deal. If it turns into 5 losses or more in a row or 8 of 10, that's bad.
by joaquin Jul 10, 2008 9:35 AM
before, people always expected the worst from the rays. now, they always expect only the best. what a huge change. but this is something the rays have to live with as they have become legitimate. go rays!
