CLEVELAND — The Rays already have lost any chance of carrying confidence and momentum from their stellar start into an All-Star break that apparently can't start soon enough.

And today they can lose their hold on first place.

The Rays lost their sixth straight Saturday, 8-4 to the previously woeful Indians, and what was a five-game AL East lead over the Red Sox just a week ago is down to a half-game going into today's first-half finale.

"It's just collective as a group we're not getting it done," DH Cliff Floyd said. "I think sometimes things snowball on you a little bit, and I think, I hope not think, I hope, this is a good learning experience for us, just like anything we went through this season thus far.

"And thank God the break is tomorrow."

The story line of the skid has been somewhat straightforward, a lack of offense magnifying pitching and defensive mistakes and causing fans frightening flashbacks.

The Rays (55-38) took some solace in scoring four runs in the eighth inning — more than in their previous four games combined — though they were down 7-0 at the time, having been blanked by Indians spot starter Matt Ginter, who hadn't won a big-league game in more than four years.

They even got a hit, actually two in a row, with a runner in scoring position, their first since the seventh inning Tuesday. And manager Joe Maddon praised their effort to rally, as Floyd and Dioner Navarro had back-to-back two-run hits.

"Hopefully," he said, "that breaks it open a bit" for today.

As much as Maddon said he doesn't believe in changing things because of the slump, he did, benching B.J. Upton and batting Eric Hinske third.

Hitting coach Steve Henderson held a 20-minute pregame meeting telling players to relax and, Maddon said, "re-establish awareness" of situations.

But it didn't change much.

In the slide, they scored 11 and hit .198, going 4-for-47 with runners in scoring position.

And that's not all that's wrong.

Matt Garza gave up a career-worst 11 hits and a season-high-matching seven runs in five innings, including a pair of two-run homers. Maddon said his location was off, but Garza said he made good pitches ("I was just like yeah, yeah, wow") that the Indians seemed to expect and somehow managed hit to good spots.

And the defense was again shoddy.

Gabe Gross, playing center in place of Upton, and rightfielder Hinske ran and dived for Ryan Garko's bases-loaded line drive in the third, but both missed, and three runs scored.

Later, Ben Zobrist, subbing for injured shortstop Jason Bartlett, booted a grounder for their 23rd error in 22 games; they made 30 in their first 71.

Win or lose today, the break won't be as fun as they hoped.

"All the hype was great, it was a great thing to be part of … it's a great turnaround for this club," Floyd said. "We're taking the high side of this and saying, you know what, we played a good half, it's unfortunate we're losing a little bit right now.

"But if you had to ask anybody in this locker room, I think he would say I'd rather this happen right now before the break and hopefully in the second half we come out on fire just like we did to start this thing off."

Rays guys, ya killin' me. I had a nice stash of free Dunkin Donuts built up and this week of ca-ca totally tapped my delicious donut inventory. I don't have any left!! So if you don't want me to starve, please start winning! I need them donuts!

Taking the day (week) off ahead of a vacation is (weak), or fill in the blank. Maybe next year Carl, B.J. Maybe it's lack of player leadership. Hopefully it's you are just too tired to compete.

If only Rocco were healthy. What terrible luck for this team. Now Kaz is losing his edge. We need help. A shot in the arm. Sox/Yanks, u better hope we don't win today or you'll be suckin' on salt-water goin' into the break. Rays in 1st!

I see Hinske is back on the bench after getting only three hits last night. I wish Maddon would 'hangup' his hangups about "lefties can't hit lefties", and play the guys who helped get them into First Place in the first place. Joe frustrates me !!!

Please trade/send down/release Gomes. He's a liability in the field and either strikes out (often) or homers (infrequently). Plus, we don't have a helmet to fit him as evidence by his constant tugging on the cap's bill.

The loss to Kansas, a game that Tampa should had won, that was the turn around, moral is down, and I can not see a recovery, if you look at teams like the Sox and NYY, you do not see them losing that many games in a row.

What's wrong RAH??? You sound a little sensitive. As Jack Nicholson would say, "You can't handle the truth!!"
by Brian Jul 13, 2008 8:09 PM
RAH - On the Gross / Hinske play, one of them should have been backing up the other. Plus, you should go back to writing class before you force us to attempt to read what you've written.

I'm as frustrated and embarrassed as the next Rays fan, but maybe this is a blessing in disguise. It shows Joe what areas need help BEFORE the trading deadline. Also, please TRADE GOMES for anything you can get! Even a single A farmer!

Keep it going Rays. This is just a tough spot in the long schedule. Win today, go into the break on top and let the few days off charge the batteries. You have so much to be proud of, don't let the nay sayers get to you. Go Rays!!!
by Marc Jul 13, 2008 8:08 PM
This offense has gotten so ugly now I'm starting to think that adding just one right-handed bat won't be enough. Everyone knows what to do to beat the Rays now--pull any left-hander off the street and you've got yourself a win. Pathetic.

Enjoy first place for one more day boys, cuz the Red Sox and Yankees are back. Third place isn't so bad....
by derrick Jul 13, 2008 8:08 PM
i agree with RAH, mr. tompkin...give me a break. and by the way who picked the headline "fall from first nearly complete." have a little heart, and show some hometown pride. we get enough negative press from the NYTimes.
by Boston Hater Jul 13, 2008 8:08 PM
There you GO SOX, chirping when the Red sox have come back a bit. Go stuff your face with chowder so we don't need to listen to your insufferable accent at the Pit. Put a fence around Boston and never let anyone out, EVER AGAIN!!! Rot PapelDouche!
by Marc Jul 13, 2008 8:07 PM
Why wasn't Ruggiano brought up again instead of Brignac? He was batting .290 with slugging % over .400 when sent down and is a good fielder. Rays need to unload Glover, Hammel.. 2 bums. Trade for Gomes. And quickly. 6-6 in 2nd half so far.
by Tone Jul 13, 2008 8:07 PM
Some of the players are obviosly bitter and are taking their frustrations out in the field. Lackluster play from some equals loss for all. C'mon guys, you have the best job in the world-PLAY! CC and Upton were the most exciting players in MLB. Hurts.
by darryl Jul 13, 2008 8:07 PM
i really hope the all star break helps this team out.they may be still at the top,but they keep haveing this problem they wont even smell the post season.they need help somewhere jason bay,or nady.shoot even barry-bonds.
by whr Jul 13, 2008 8:07 PM
Bye,Bye Rays ... good at Home, lousy on the Road. When you get out of that Band Box, Tropicanna Field and play some real baseball. Can't wait to see them at Fenway, where they play another 6 games. Where are the Cow Bells now villagers?
by Go Sox Jul 13, 2008 9:56 AM
Hey Rays, don't look now, but look who's right behind you. That's right...we're back!!!
by RAH Jul 13, 2008 9:54 AM
Topkin you are a cretin period you offer the fans you wrongly claim to represent proof of that every day. When Gross and Hinske dove you make it sound like an error instead of phenomenal effort by both to catch a ball in the gap. Cliff Floyd should have your job he tells it like it is they have we played a good half, a very good half and it is unfortunate we're losing a little bit right now. You jump on the streak; you couldn?t wait for things to go bad nowhere do you mention that the Tampa Bay Rays no matter what happens will have one of the 4 best records in the majors ? get it mister the Rays are in it whether it fits into your demented media mind or not live with it and take your Yankee / Red Sox shirt off and get some Ray?s gear.
by JeffC Jul 13, 2008 9:54 AM
Wow. All around stinker last night. They'll stop the bleeding today and go to break still in first. I hope they get a right-handed bat before the deadline. GO RAYS!
by fred Jul 13, 2008 9:52 AM
Joe Magrane said they were putting too much pressure on themselves. In my neighborhood that's called CHOKE.
by John Jul 13, 2008 9:50 AM
Time to add 1 or 2 additional hitters before trading deadline or it will be a long second half.
