Rays fall out of first with 7th straight loss

CLEVELAND — They've lost seven straight games and their hold on first place, and about the only thing the Rays could be happy about as they headed different ways out of town was that they don't have to play again until Friday.

The All-Star break officially began after Sunday's 5-2 defeat, their fourth in a row to the last-place Indians, though some would say the Rays started days ago.

The 55-39 record is still by far the best they've ever had at the break, though much of the thrill and shine is gone, as is what eight days ago was a five-game lead over the Red Sox. Instead, the Rays will spend the break in second place, 21/2 games ahead of the Twins for the AL wild card.

Maddon wants them to use the time to rest their bodies and refresh their minds, and he plans to address the group before Thursday's workout to remind them of what it took, and what it will take, to continue winning.

"We've got to get our focus back. We have to continue what we've been doing at home and then we have to play better baseball on the road in order to get to that last game of the year," Maddon said.

"We were going to have a losing streak at some point, whether it was five, six or seven games, whatever it was. It happens to everybody, and I accept that.

"But you've got to learn from it. When you're a young player, sometimes you feel as though you're going to get the same kind of an opportunity on an annual basis, and it's not necessarily true. When you have these opportunities, you have to take advantage of it. You've really got to rise to the occasion. And the focus and the preparation has to remain constant. I just want to remind our players of that.

"We're in a very good position right now. We've earned the right to be there. Now we've got to do everything to stay there."

To start, they'll have to hit better. The lack of offense has been a constant theme of the losing streak, as they've scored just 13 runs, hit .187 and gone 5-for-53 with runners in scoring position.

And they didn't make much of an effort to stop the slide Sunday, getting a season-low-matching three hits (all singles) while striking out a season-high 14 times against five nondescript Indians pitchers, who retired the last 17 Rays. They managed only two runs despite seven walks — all in the first four innings.

And because they're not hitting, all other struggles are magnified. Balls are dropping in or just getting by fielders, pitchers aren't getting outs when they need them.

All-Star Scott Kazmir had another rough outing, allowing two homers in six innings, and is 1-4, 4.97 in his past seven starts.

"My confidence really isn't there right now," he said. "It's kind of in the back of your head right before you throw it, you feel like you don't want to throw a certain pitch in a certain location. And you just can't think like that. I've got to get that out of my head, I guess."

That's not their only problem.

"We're going to go through this," Kazmir said. "We just have to not dwell on it, and get right back on track."

Easier said, or done?

Calm down, hotshots, there are 68 games left. Losing streaks are normal, even for good teams, and the Rays have been burning adrenaline for a good bit of the season. The letdown was inevitable. Sounds like some fans need the break more than the Rays!
by The Only Brian Jul 14, 2008 3:05 PM
If St Louis can go 83-78 in the regular season and win a World Series. Can't we win with our pitching staff as opposed to theirs that year ? C'mon.
by Roger Jul 14, 2008 3:05 PM
All I can say is, there'd better be 30,000+ at the Trop when the Jays come to town Friday. C'mon fans THIS is when your team needs you! This is what makes Yankee and Sox fans. They rally behind their teams and pull them out of skids!
by Dennis Jul 14, 2008 3:05 PM
The idiots are out and the I told you so morons from Boston and NY are here telling us they foresaw this, SP times, do us all a favor and stop this mindless commenting. You do say when comments are submitted that you 'screen' them.
by Dennis Jul 14, 2008 3:05 PM
It is not the what, but the how. The Rays are .500 over the last 14 games, and before that, they are +16. This year we hoped for .500, if April 1 someone said we would .5 games behind the Jerk Sox, we would have taken it in a heartbeat.
by Rocky Jul 14, 2008 1:16 PM
Ok Rays fans, take a deep breath and look at the facts. The Rays are 1/2 game out of first (with 3 games in hand) and 2.5 up in the wild card. On this date since 2002 we have been on average 20.8 games out of first place. Support this team!!
by Jimbo Jul 14, 2008 1:15 PM
The "stadium" arguments are the most nonsensical things I've ever read! They swept the Cubs and the Sox after the stadium was put on hold! How do you explain that? Get a life! GO RAYS!
by get ready Jul 14, 2008 1:15 PM
you red sox fans need to get off this board. you're not welcome. you're just scared that you've got somebody else to deal with now in the al east. it just got that much tougher, losers.
by Carey Jul 14, 2008 1:15 PM
Truth, Good. Leave it there. It will serve as a beacon to all others that your house is populated by completely pathetic human beings. Man, what tired rhetoric you spew.
by Kim Jul 14, 2008 1:15 PM
Go Rays! Yes go away. Far away. I wonder what it cost the owners to pay for those winning games? Money talks. Looks like baseball is also fixed.
by john Jul 14, 2008 1:15 PM
start so fast you can burn out. i hear the fizzle
by HR Jul 14, 2008 1:15 PM
Panic a little - but don't freak out. The ggod guys will be alright. Yank/Sux fans go away. I work in HR for a vey large employer -in TB. I encourage everyone to do what I do. Resumer from NY or Boston -toss it. They will move away eventually!
by bill Jul 14, 2008 1:15 PM
The honeymoon is over, all you fair weathered, bandwaggon fans can go back to cheering for the Yankees or the Red Sox!! All you Yankee transplants disgust me, move down here and shove the Yankees or Red Sox into everyones face. Go back up North!!
by Truth Jul 14, 2008 9:59 AM
I bet they'd get real good again if that stupid stadium were being pushed down our throats right now instead of the delay till 2010. Our red sign remains until we're cleared from paying for milllionaires hobbies.
by The Cool Brian Jul 14, 2008 9:59 AM
These things happen. Teams have losing streaks. Typical Tapma fans will give up on them, just like the fair weather chumps they are. This team is solid, but not built for the playoffs, They're missing 3 pieces in an SP, RP, and RF. Time to go shoppin
by realist Jul 14, 2008 9:58 AM
Getting real tired of the "fair weather fan" garbage. First you ( the Rays and media ) complain because the lack of attendance. Then you try and shove a stadium down our throats. We went through 10 years of this. Fair weather my %$*& ! Win games
by JV Jul 14, 2008 9:58 AM
Teams have had longer losing streaks and still made the playoffs and they're only a half game out right now. The season is just over half gone so they can either batten up the hatches or fold. I'm hoping for and assuming the former will happen.
by steve Jul 14, 2008 9:58 AM
The losing streak is due to one thing: the Rays have been outscored 45-13. We have given up over six runs a game while scoring less than two runs a game. It's like a divorced person learning how to date: the Rays have to remember how to score!
by Whitey Jul 14, 2008 9:58 AM
This is a slump. It happens to teams every year. These guys have not forgotten how to hit, throw and run. they will rebound and continue to intrique us. The hitting, especially with runners on base does need to improve. I still believe!
by Scot Jul 14, 2008 9:57 AM
Well after the break the Rays go north of the border to toronto and I am hopfull to get up there to see one of the games this weekend.
by gary Jul 14, 2008 9:57 AM
The Rays have the poteinial of becoming the best team in the AL, someday, yes I say someday...not this year As I wrote last week responding to the name the team stupidity.......water always seeks it's own level...the Sox will crush the Rays
by Larry Jul 14, 2008 9:57 AM
Stephen - how did MLB convince the other teams to cooperate? 162 games - there will be ups and downs. No panic, just regroup and execute. Great time for the All-Star break in terms of breaking the mental aspect of the losing streak
by Randy Jul 14, 2008 9:57 AM
If all you nay-sayers were actually baseball fans you would have watched the standings and saw how the Rays got to first place. The Red Sox lost 7 in a row. Now look where the Sox are. What goes around comes around. GO RAYS!! They'll be contenders.
by Homer Jul 14, 2008 9:57 AM
The Devil Rays are a poorly run organization. Eva Longoria would still be in the minors if he didn't foolishly accept that contract. No way such bush league management can be successful. It's called karma. JOBA FOR CY YOUNG 2008
by Stephen Jul 14, 2008 9:33 AM
Maybe MLB was letting them win in order to get a new baseball stadium by encouraging fans and voters. Now that the Rays have taken the referendum and a vote off of the table they are loosing. Hmmmmmmmmm?????
by PJ Jul 14, 2008 9:33 AM
True, St. Louis won 83 games the year they won the world series but that was the National League. 83 wins does not get you in the playoffs in the American League.
by Tomas Jul 14, 2008 9:33 AM
If the Rays can not beat Cleveland, will not beat good teams neither, I was hoping for at least one victory out of 3, but what happened at Cleveland was embarrasing.
by Murf Jul 14, 2008 9:32 AM
It will be interesting to see how the team reacts to this adversity. It will be a measure of how talented this team really is and if they have the heart to get through this. I believe they do. GO RAYS!!!
by Suzanne Jul 14, 2008 9:32 AM
It was just ten days ago when Rays fans were in the face of Red Sox fans at the Trop. Bragging that the Sox were done, etc. As I said that night; Don't get too cocky. Titles aren't won on July 2nd.
by W.C. Jul 14, 2008 9:32 AM
True fans will not give up. Don't be a fair weather friend. When they have lots of support, they win. I hope to see lots of fans in the stadium this coming weekend! They are young and need us to support them.It will matter if the stands are empty.
by Jimbo Jul 14, 2008 9:32 AM
Nice to know TB "fans" are still fair-weather. It's not the end of the world, people! '83 Orioles had "2" 7-game losing streaks & they still won the WS. '04 Bosox had plenty of losing streaks, yet they won when it mattered. Don't quit on them now
by Ian Jul 14, 2008 9:32 AM
We know we know the same guys that got us here will get us there I believe GO RAYS
by Jim Jul 14, 2008 7:36 AM
Amazing how fast these guys went from awesome to awful. It's like Deja vu every day now.
by Tone Jul 14, 2008 7:36 AM
That was a hard week, it looked like they had given up before games were even halfway through. Hope the break helps.
by BG Jul 14, 2008 7:36 AM
St. Louis won 83 regular-season games, by the way. 83-78. St. Louis had the worst regular-season record of any World Series winner in history. Not that it matters when you're hoisting the trophy.2005 St Louis Cardinals.Think positive Rays.
