Selig reasserts Rays' need for new stadium

NEW YORK — The Rays have had their turn at the top of the major-league standings this season. Tuesday, commissioner Bud Selig indicated they are at the top of MLB's list of stadium concerns.

Selig said there are three teams that must have new stadiums. He said that in the case of two, the Florida Marlins and Oakland A's, there has been concrete progress and "we appear to have solved it."

But as for the Rays?

He offered only vague confidence they will figure something out.

"I think in the third one we will," Selig said. "I have confidence in the Rays ownership that they will solve it."

Meeting with members of the Baseball Writers Association of America before the All-Star Game, Selig reiterated his claim that the Rays need to replace Tropicana Field primarily as a matter of economics.

"They need a new stadium," he said. "You can't compete with other people who have ultimate sources of revenues that you don't have and never will have, and then expect to be competitive on the field.

"I've sort of never understood why some people just don't understand that because I think the evidence is so clear. You can't change local media (revenues from radio and TV rights) because that's a product of demographics, and there's other things you can't change sometimes.

"But in attendance the one thing you can do is build a ballpark that produces competitive revenues. They're not in a ballpark right now that produces competitive revenues. So the answer to your question is that it's very important."

The Rays announced last month they had tabled plans for a new stadium on the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront and would await recommendations of a communitywide committee. MLB president Bob DuPuy said league officials were "obviously disappointed when a plan gets derailed or shortened because it's clear that a stadium is necessary."

Selig said he has talked to principal owner Stuart Sternberg about it, that "they are handling it the way they feel they should" and was "confident that they're on the right track."

The Rays have a lease at the Trop through 2027 and are expected to first consider other sites in St. Petersburg. But when asked if relocation would be an option for any of the three teams if they don't get stadiums, Selig said: "I don't think we'll have to get to that."

Selig said he was pleased with the Rays' nearly 40 percent increase in attendance, to an average of 21,062, though still second to last in the American League and 27th in the majors.

"I think they've had a very, very positive gain on attendance, I don't think there's any question about it," Selig said. "Look, you don't gain everything back in one year. The lag theory always says it comes the next year, or sometimes even longer than that in some cases.

"They've had a remarkable season — until the last week — and hopefully they will continue to, and I think their attendance has been quite remarkable, given where they had been for years. So it's going to take time, I think, but overall it's very, very satisfactory."

How is an outdoor stadium "insane"? Other then Sundays, the games are at 7pm when the sun is setting. The water front site offers breezes off the water, and the design showed a cover that would keep the sun off the stadium and retracted at night.

New stadium in 90 degree heat seems not to be a good idea, especially when you're not getting over 50% full in existing Tropicana. One season of great performance needs a repeat, then talk new field. - Best wishes. -LarryO

So if the Rays get into the playoffs and even (drool) the World Series, is Selig going to allow the games to be held in the Trop?
by darryl Jul 18, 2008 11:03 AM
hank lets dont go with the climate thing its just as hot,and humid in boston as it is here in the summer.kc yes the economy stinks for some of us,but we are paying for things like jabil that we dont really see.i guess if we dont see it it wont hurt.
by john Jul 18, 2008 10:10 AM
The 9,000 they had @ Disney was probably more than they would get @ the trop for an early April series on aMon,Tues,Weds with kids in school and playing a mediocre team. Not as many old people here, and if you add tourists you have more to draw from.
by nzjunky Jul 18, 2008 10:07 AM
Paul, we went to the Cubs series finale on a Thurs, left our jobs in d-town Tampa at 5 and didn't get to our seats until 7:45! Yeh, we can drive all right, but driving 2 1/2 hours from Tpa to south StP is nuts. MOVE CLOSER to where the people are!
by CharlieRay Jul 18, 2008 10:05 AM
I stand on the season ticket holders line every home game & every season ticket holder I talk to says they will not buy another season ticket to an open stadium.
by Paul Jul 17, 2008 8:04 AM
You bet John, those 7K that showed up at Disney proved the Rays should be in Orlando. The Trop is nicer than half of MLB parks, it has good sight lines and is comfortable. Winning has proved that people from Tampa actually know how to drive.
by Ian Jul 17, 2008 8:03 AM
Does anyone? Anyone? Take what this idiot says seriously. I believe we now have some time to talk and seriously debate where they should play.
by Ian Jul 17, 2008 8:02 AM
Bud, go away. Don't go away mad, just go away.
by aj Jul 17, 2008 8:02 AM
The comish is holding the citizens of St. Pete hostage. He wants what he wants or else! And closer? Do you want them to put the stadium in your front yard. Funny St. Pete isn't even in the team name just in thier city coffers. It's a ball GAME guys.
by Hank Jul 17, 2008 7:52 AM
Please, an outdoor stadium? That is just stupid. I would like to see the proof of additional revenue streams with a new stadium. I am a BB fan and support the Rays, but again, an outdoor stadium is insane for this climate.
by KC Jul 17, 2008 7:51 AM
Tax, home insurance, gas, food, etc increases. Foreclosures. Serious mounting financial problems since 2004. Citizens are afraid of having no home. Do the Rays understand this?
by john Jul 16, 2008 9:28 PM
Move the team to Orlando.Work out some kind of deal with Disney and a stadium with a retractable roof. The retirees in St.Pete don't want a team.Rays also need a stronger radio station so that people in Central Fla. can listen and follow the team.
by Eric Jul 16, 2008 8:28 PM
Take all Bud's comments with a grain of salt. This after all is the cartoon character that allows an exhibition game to decide homefield for the series that determines the world champion.
by don Jul 16, 2008 7:19 PM
Rays need to move closer to Tampa.
by Greg Jul 16, 2008 7:18 PM
The trop is the worst stadium in baseball. It is to dark, and the playing surface is terrible. Doug, you should hope they can build a setting like Wrigley.
by Ernie Jul 16, 2008 7:18 PM
The proposed new stadium is set to hold 36,000 people. What good would this do to build if Selig is demanding more attendance? He's obviously saying he wants a 50,000 seat stadium for the Rays to compete. Screw you Bud Selig!
by Wade Jul 16, 2008 7:17 PM
Yeah, because of greed of the players and overspending of the owners that we have to have a new stadium, not only that, the taxpayers get to pay.
by homer Jul 16, 2008 7:17 PM
um, nzjunky, hate to break it to you, but most sporting event venues are in shady neighborhoods. i dont care where the stadium is but we need to at least have a retractable roof wherever we are. storms and hot as balls sun doesn't equal fun
by RG Jul 16, 2008 7:16 PM
The ownership needs to find a way to get the ballpark in Channelside. That would be perfect, they could add more bars at/by Channelside for a great pre and post game atmosphere like Doug mentioned..
by nzjunky Jul 16, 2008 4:05 PM
joe - you're crazy. We go to about 5 or 6 games a year, and would go to more if the stupid stadium wasn't in that cruddy location. Parking stinks, the neighborhood stinks. Rays, please move to Tampa where you will be appreciated!
by Tim Jul 16, 2008 3:18 PM
We need a waterfront stadium. Fans will become educated enough in 2 years to realize that's where the stadium belongs - on the water in beautiful downtown St Pete!
by Eric Jul 16, 2008 3:15 PM
I am at the trop probably five or six times a year from GA. It is not that bad, They will need a new one in the next ten years but I wonder if people who complain have ever been there. There are bigger dumps out there, Shae has been worse for years
by rip Jul 16, 2008 3:13 PM
If Bud wants competitive baseball, why not share TV revenues & institute a salary cap like the NFL?
by David Jul 16, 2008 12:57 PM
From the outside looking in (NY) it seems the people of St Pete don't want to help pay for a new stadium. In lieu of that situation, somehow there has to be an affordable way out of that lease. Build a new stadium somewhere else where its wanted.
by Mike Jul 16, 2008 12:57 PM
The only place we can win is in the Trop. Besides, it's a great place and I don't see Mr. Selig campaigning to have MLB underwrite a new stadium.
by Tim Jul 16, 2008 12:57 PM
I agree with Joe, I have no problem with the Trop and I go to about 25 games a year. But, a new stadium is needed to allow for greater revenue and a competitive team. St Pete sounds like another Pinellas senior, who only cares about today.
by thomas Jul 16, 2008 12:57 PM
i truly enjoy games at the trop since now there's a heart beat in the team.....has major renovation ever been considered or is bud just trying to pump extra rev in for himself? hmm...
by Doug Jul 16, 2008 12:57 PM
It's not the Trop which keeps me from going to more games, it's the economics. Besides what is wrong in sitting in 72 degrees on a hot Florida July / August Sunday? The new stadium should be on the waterfront, in a "Wrigglyville" like setting.
by Tim Jul 16, 2008 12:57 PM
Just look at his initials and it says it all.. B.S. He has GOT to be the WORST commish ever .. he comes across like an old suit that smells like moth balls . go away, BUD ...
by Jimmy Jul 16, 2008 12:57 PM
The Trop is a dump. Any real baseball fan knows this. If the Rays, and St. Pete, want to be taken seriously they need a new ballpark.
by John Jul 16, 2008 12:57 PM
When was the last time Bud went to the trop?
by St Pete Resident Jul 16, 2008 8:01 AM
If Selig wants the Rays to have a new stadium, tell him to whip out HIS checkbook. I, as a taxpayer, am not ready to take on the expense when the last one isn't fully paid off yet.
by joe Jul 16, 2008 8:01 AM
Call me crazy, but I actually like going to games at the Trop! If Bud is so intent on the Rays having a new place to play, let him pay for it!
