Rays in pain: Longoria to join Crawford on the sideline

OAKLAND, Calif. — As if having star leftfielder Carl Crawford likely sidelined the rest of the season isn't bad enough, the Rays are also going to be without rookie sensation Evan Longoria for about three weeks due to a fractured right wrist.

Longoria, hit by a J.J. Putz pitch Thursday, said he planned to return to the lineup this week after missing three games with what had been described as a bruise. But the Rays sent him back to St. Petersburg, and further examination by their hand specialist, Dr. Doug Carlan, revealed a non-displaced fracture, and Longoria was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Crawford told the Times on Monday night that he was "debating" whether to have surgery to repair the torn tendon band on his right middle finger but would miss six-eight weeks either way, meaning, at best, he could return late in the postseason. The Rays said no decisions had been made.

Losing their top two all-around players would seem a considerable blow to the Rays, even with a four-game lead in the American League East.

"Obviously, it's a tough situation," executive vice president Andrew Friedman said. "But this team has shown great perseverance all year. I expect it will continue."

Justin Ruggiano was recalled from Triple-A Durham to join a left- and rightfield mix-and-match ensemble that includes Eric Hinske, Gabe Gross and, on an occasional basis, Rocco Baldelli. Willy Aybar and Ben Zobrist will man third base.

Friedman said the Rays would look for help through waiver claims and trades but downplayed that possibility ("extremely unlikely") while playing up the idea that their current players could handle it.

"It gets back to the fact where we are in the standings, it isn't because of one player," he said. "It's a challenge for us, but we have great confidence in the guys we have, because there are a lot of guys in that clubhouse who have helped us get to this point. … We have confidence they will keep us in the position we are today."

Adding impact players might be difficult because the Rays' good record leaves them in a bad position to make waiver claims: 29th for NL players, 13th for AL players. And in front of them are the Red Sox, who can — and would — block them by claiming any potential help. The Rays could acquire players who have cleared waivers, or were released. (Friedman wouldn't touch a Barry Bonds question.)

Longoria said Sunday in Seattle that he was feeling better and set to return when the pain subsided, but that was based on the diagnosis that a fracture seen on the X-rays was old, Friedman said.

The Rays wanted to be sure and flew Longoria back to Tampa overnight, confident enough he was okay that he had a ticket back to San Francisco, but Carlan determined with additional imaging it was a new fracture, on the tip of the ulnar bone.

Friedman said that had Longoria kept playing, it could have become displaced and developed into a serious injury.

Longoria has been their top producer, hitting .278 with a team-high 22 homers and 71 RBIs. He is eligible to play Aug. 23 and will be re-evaluated then, with the hope he will return soon after. "It shouldn't be too much longer than that time period," Friedman said.

On Crawford, the Rays were waiting Monday night for input from some other doctors to "come up with the best course of action," Friedman said.

But Crawford said from St. Petersburg that whether he tries to heal naturally (with the finger in a splint) or has surgery, he was likely done for at least the regular season, so neither choice was good. "It's about the same for both, six-eight weeks," he said.

Ruggiano, who hit .290 in three previous stints with the Rays and .311 with 11 homers and 51 RBIs at Durham, was chosen (over Jonny Gomes) because of his defense.

"Defense is a big focus for us," Friedman said. "Obviously, Carl is a premier defensive leftfielder in baseball. With Ruggiano we feel like he will eat into that a little bit."

Friedman said Baldelli came through Sunday's return "feeling very good," but "it's unrealistic for us to be able to count him on a day-to-day basis."

the injuries are heartbraking. It seems this team has curse.

Rough breaks with injuries. Hoping for fast and permanent healing. But this team is really a team, not dependent on one or two players. I've got faith in them! Go Rays!

I wonder if Mike Piazza has kept himself in shape? He was looking for a DH gig this year and can't do any worse than Cliff Floyd. Could also be helpful with the young pitching staff down the stretch.

A very popular sports channel, said to bring in Barry Bonds ! Were they just kidding ? Are they serious or joking around ? Either way, it says we are still a joke... Not appreciated...
by Brian Aug 12, 2008 1:52 PM
Someone pitch to Barry Bonds to come here for the league minimum please ? With the chance to win a pennant ? Are they kidding ?
by Sean Aug 12, 2008 1:08 PM
Bonds = clubhouse cancer. That's ABSOLUTELY NOT what this team needs. They live and die with their own guys. Ruggiano will be fine, Pena and Aki are heating up and the pitching just needs to continue it's strong season. GO RAYS!!

Been watching Justin all season in Durham. He deserves the opportunity and will do a great job. It's a joke it took this long for him to get called. Gomes is looking terrible in Durham. Started hot, 0 for is last three games.

CC and Longo are blows. But, it's a team sport. Other guys have to step up. With the "rest" these two guys will get, they'll be ready to rock to finish out the season. Stay healthy and we'll win the pennant!

Maybe BJ Upton will wake up out of that slumber he's in, bat him 4 th and lets see if he can carry us a bit ...

Two very bad injuries to the Rays. Glad to see Rocco back but your schedule doesn't favor staying on top of the AL East.
by Gene Aug 12, 2008 12:48 PM
Bill, under NO circumstances should the Rays give any thought to brining in Bonds. He has no precendent for ever keeping his ego in check, what would make him do it now? We have made a committment to the farm, give them a shot. Evan and CC get well
by ak Aug 12, 2008 12:47 PM
.... broken wrist....can anyone remember Bob Horner. Hope this gets fixed the first time.
by Steven H. Aug 12, 2008 12:47 PM
Big news! Barry Bonds was sent to the Reds! jk.
by Edgar Aug 12, 2008 9:35 AM
Ruggiano was called because of his defense.WHAT! How about him getting called up because of his big numbers in AAA along with his defense. .311 BA 11 HR's 51 RBI's. GOOD GRIEF only his defense dopey comment Friedman. Justin will contribute w/ da bat.
by Michael Aug 12, 2008 9:35 AM
This may be a blessing in disguise. If Longo (rookie) and CC come in rested after the 15 day DL it might be a needed push for the tougher road schedule in September. If you couple that along with the projected calling up of Price it should be interesting to say the least.
by glenn Aug 12, 2008 9:35 AM
Based on his stats, I don't see much drop off with Ruggiano. He may not be as fast as CC, but CC had pretty much given up on base stealing, anyway, so where's the loss. And he's the needed "righty." What took so long to bring him up is my question.
by Christine Aug 12, 2008 9:35 AM
Wow, poor Evan. This is definitely a big blow to the team, but his long-term health is way more important right now. Heal up fast Evan, we all love ya!
by TBone Aug 12, 2008 9:35 AM
Greg Gross? As one of the self proclaimed "10 best sports sections in America" Do you think you could require your staff writers to actually know the names of players on our 1st place team?
by Bill Aug 12, 2008 9:35 AM
It's time to put up with the media circus for 6-weeks and sign Barry Bonds. Major League Minimum $,instant offense, no loss of prospects necessary, and at the end of the season he's gone. I think Bonds would keep his ego in check for a pennant run.
by John Aug 12, 2008 9:35 AM
In the 60s, the Dodgers couldn't hit a lick. But they kept winning because they had great pitching and they played small ball. We're in position to do the same, hopefully with some Pena power added.
by Mike Aug 12, 2008 9:35 AM
I feel bad for Crawford. He has played his heart out for the Rays over the past years.
by Jerry Aug 12, 2008 9:35 AM
Twins fan here: Don't know much about the Rays except what I've read on seen through the media. Real tough breaks losing Crawford and now Longoria to injuries. Keep fighting and hang in there! I'm pulling for the Rays to win the A.L. East.
