Carlos Pena, who homered in the 12th, celebrates with Akinori Iwamura, center, and Jason Bartlett.
OAKLAND, Calif. — So much was going on in Thursday's 12-inning 7-6 win over the A's.
The Rays battling back twice to tie, taking one lead, blowing it, then taking another and hanging on. There was Carlos Pena blasting another homer to top a list of big hits, Jason Hammel pitching 2 2/3 key innings for the win, Cliff Floyd running around the bases all afternoon, Rocco Baldelli diving after balls in the outfield.
There was Troy Percival coming off the field with a right knee sprain that likely will land him on the disabled list, Jason Bartlett coming back and a team-record-tying eight pitchers coming in.
And, 4½ hours later, there were the Rays (73-47, and still three games ahead of Boston in the AL East) talking about how such another remarkable win leaves them feeling, despite all the reasons not to, that they're still going places.
"It's been happening the whole season, and this type of win is what was happening in May, June when we started winning a lot of games late, we got our confidence up," Floyd said. "We believe that as long as we're on the field we've got a chance to win a ball game, whether we've got to come back or something happens in the game. …
"I just think it's us believing in ourselves, no matter who we've got on the field, and going out there and doing it. … That's what we have to feed off of — no matter who, no matter what situation, we believe they'll get it done."
Even manager Joe Maddon couldn't keep up with it all, missing Bartlett's error on his first play back at shortstop because he had to go to the bathroom. But he couldn't have been more impressed by what he saw.
"I am so proud of the way our guys played today. Kept fighting, kept coming back, all the different things that occurred today, truly what I'm looking for," Maddon said.
"I can't ask for anything more out of the position players, the pitchers, whomever. It's exactly what we're looking for here. Beyond everything else, it's the continuous maximum effort. It was tremendous. I loved it. Absolutely loved it."
The Rays tied the score 4-4 in the fifth, and it stayed that way until the ninth, when B.J. Upton's double ruined rookie reliever Brad Ziegler's career-starting scoreless streak at 39 innings. But Percival got hurt and Grant Balfour ended up giving up the tying run.
It took until the 12th, but they were at it again, with what Maddon called two equally big moments.
First, it was Pena, continuing his second-half sizzle by putting the Rays back ahead with a leadoff homer, his eighth in 19 games and 23rd overall. The Rays added a second run when Floyd doubled and scored on Dioner Navarro's single.
Then, when the A's had first and third and no outs after an error, a single and a wild pitch, Hammel stayed composed and got Kurt Suzuki to hit into a double play. A run scored, but Trever Miller came on to get the last out.
"It's a great win for us, because it was actually quite difficult," Pena said. "I'm very proud of this team for staying in the present, not allowing the things that didn't go our way to affect us."
Sometimes, that's the only way.

Troy Percival needs to get in shape. I am 52 years old and in twice the shape he is in. His body is breaking down because of it.
As far as Rocco, he is playing inspiring baseball, exactly as he always has. Go for it Rocco!

Frank-rocco did what he was supposed to do, too bad his crystal ball didn't tell him it was going to shoot right back to the catcher off the back stop. i guess that catch in the outfield wasn't good either #1 on web gems but what does espn know.

How stupid was that, Percy getting injured trying to tag the runner? Can someone explain why he didn't just flip it to 1B?

Frank-What planet are you from? Got cut from Litle League? How often does a wild pitch come right back to the catcher? If you don't break immediately on a wild pitch, you'll never make it. Let's appreciate the defense that he played last night!

Balfour will be the closer and sounds like Salas is on his way up. Balfour will do well as the closer.

This team relies me of the '69 Mets! A team of grit. Sure, the wins are ugly. But you can't help but cheer for Rocco's diving catch and Pena's HR. By the way, can we please spell. It's Rays, not Ray's, and Pena, not Penna. Dunkin Donuts, here I come!

Frank, son't know what you were watching, but Rocco did exactly what he should have in that situation. The ball hit a support beam and bounced right back to the catcher. The Baseball gods just wanted to play with us some more before we got the win

To Frank below, Baldelli would have been a "dope" only if he had decided not to run on that. The ball took a weird bounce that kicked back to the catcher, and there was NO WAY Rocco could have anticipated it. I for one am glad Rocco is back! Go Rays!

Just a few kind words for Cliff Floyd. Never have so few (two knees) ran so far (810 feet)for so many (all of us). Give them and extra gallon of lintament for us the morning. Was that four runs scored without a recorded at bat?

I'm not sure losing Percival to IR is all bad, as I've lost confidence in him for a while now. He can never seem to get the 1st batter out, which is extremely important if you opt to be a closer. Now we have time to work out others there B4 Sept.

Watched the game from a sports bar in Harrisburg PA. 22 TV's were tuned to Steelers and Eagles football. One was on FSN Florida. I was so proud of our Ray's . Not easy to be away a win like they did. Guy siting next to me was a Big Ray's Fan from PA.

Why are there those who worry about where everyone is at now that the Rays are winning. Maybe they're at the bank trying not to lose their house, or at their 2nd job to pay bills. Geez, enjoy the games, but SHUTUP about others. Good grief...

OMG, that was a good game. But what the crap is with Baldelli? This dope with no outs tries to play hero and score with a past ball. Need to make sure it is first. They ought to dump the bum back to single A ball so he will learn the basics. He stinks

This was a tremendous win for the team, however, this is the A's, who are beyond terrible. We need some type of batting help soon cause games like this will not be won against Boston, Angels, etc...

We've got to get more than 5 innings from our starters though. Hopefully Garza can go deep into the game and give the bullpen some rest.

The earned run was charged to Percival, not Balfour. Percy walked the first batter as he seems to always do.
by Where are you?
Aug 15, 2008 8:46 AM
Wow, notice how the Rays are winning and no one has anything to say. Just goes to show how many losers are out there. Guess all you wannabe managers were all wrong, the lot of you. Now you're just quiet riders in the back of the bandwagon.
