Rays expect to have Percival in September

ARLINGTON, Texas — Closer Troy Percival might need surgery to repair a cartilage problem in his right knee, but the Rays expect him to be back by mid September at the latest.

Executive vice president Andrew Friedman said there is "some cartilage involvement" but not a tear in Percival's right knee. A decision is expected Monday on whether Percival, 39, should have arthroscopic surgery or try to rehab the injury and get a cortisone shot.

"It sounds like it's a two-to-four week injury in either scenario," Friedman said.

Among the issues: whether the problem is more likely to reoccur without surgery, and whether the impact of surgery would require a longer recovery.

Percival was examined Friday by Rangers doctor Keith Meister and will be seen by Rays orthopedist Koco Eaton on Monday.

Percival, hurt on a bunt play Thursday and put on the 15-day disabled list Friday, said the problem is on a weight-bearing spot on the inside of his knee, but there was no major damage.

Naturally, he expects to be back sooner: "I can only tell you if they tell me it will be three weeks, it will be two."

I have to agree with Jack. Percival looks grossly out of shape. I can't help but think he has to do more to prevent injury..ie get in shape...as wer'e gonna need him for the stretch.

I agree Jack. He is not in good enough shape for a 38 yr old to compete for a full season.

Get well soon Troy! Cant wait to see you again back in the line up!

You know what would be nice? If, instead of strutting around like a peacock, Percival would spend a little time getting into shape. Maybe if he had reported into camp in better shape he wouldn't be as injury prone.
