Eddings and Pierzynski have a history

Doug Eddings was behind the plate for Game 2 of the 2005 ALCS between the Angels and White Sox when he called strike three on A.J. Pierzynski — but not the third out — in the ninth inning of a 1-1 game. Eddings pumped his fist and made an out sign, which had everyone except Pierzynski thinking the inning was over, then ruled the two-out pitch bounced in the dirt. Pierzynski hustled to first while the Angels were running off the field. Moments later, Chicago rallied, spurring it to eight consecutive wins and a World Series title. To some at the time, Pierzynski was seen as a villain, that he somehow did something wrong, or faked the Angels out. "There was no 'faking.' It's not like I took my helmet off and put on my gear and ran to first," said Pierzynski at the time, claiming he didn't hear Eddings call him out and didn't feel catcher Josh Paul tag him. "I don't know how I pulled a 'fast one.' I knew what I heard and I knew what I saw and what I thought I saw, so I played." Sunday, he said: "I didn't think about that until you said it, but I guess it's ironic. It's just a funny coincidence, I guess. Him and I will be linked forever because of that one play and now there's two plays.''
