B.J. Upton swings through strike three from Brandon League, ending the seventh inning with his third K.
ST. PETERSBURG — Even in their otherwise magical, mystical tour of 2008, the Rays found out Tuesday there are some things in baseball you just don't do — such as beating Toronto ace Roy Halladay four times in a single season.
With Halladay holding them down, and their relievers not doing their usual job of keeping it close after James Shields left, the Rays lost 6-2 before an embarrassingly small, and early leaving, Tropicana Field crowd of 13,478.
"Of course, the odds are against you," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "But we're trying to do some very special things here this year."
The defeat, at the start of a vital nine-game homestand that leads into a rugged trip, was frustrating enough, their first back-to-back defeats in nearly a month (and first consecutive home losses since mid April). But the Rays also lost All-Star catcher Dioner Navarro, who left in the sixth inning with "cramps in both hamstrings" and was uncertain if he could play tonight.
And they lost another game off their American League East lead to the Red Sox, who not only beat the Yankees to pull within 3½ games (closest they've been since Aug. 16) but reportedly bolstered their lineup by acquiring outfielder Mark Kotsay.
The secret to beating Halladay three times (joining the 2007 Red Sox as the only teams to do so), Maddon said, isn't what you do at the plate but on the mound.
"When you're facing Halladay you have to outpitch them, and we didn't do that tonight," he said.
Shields was not his sharpest, allowing three early runs, but was still typically competitive.
"I thought I pitched pretty well, but when you're facing Halladay you have to be on your 'A' game,'' Shields said. "It was probably a 'B' game, I guess.''
The Rays managed only three singles through the first five innings against Halladay, then two runs on three singles, a hit batter and a wild pitch in the sixth, with Eric Hinske's two-out hit the key. With a chance for more, and Navarro unable to continue, the Rays used Shawn Riggans to pinch hit and he struck out, allowing Halladay to leave with a 3-2 lead.
"Honestly, I don't know how we beat him three times," Hinske said. "He's probably the best pitcher in baseball."
Halladay (15-6 against everyone else) said he wasn't thinking about the three losses: "It's hard to focus on things like that. I think you have to go in with a game plan and you're definitely aware that it's a team that can get you at any point.''
The Jays built on their lead from there, scoring one run in each of the last three innings. In the seventh, after Shields left with two out and two on, it was an odd-bouncing chopper that third baseman Willy Aybar couldn't handle. "I know that Willy makes that play and it just didn't happen for us tonight," Maddon said.
In the eighth, it was a two-out homer by Rod Barajas on an 0-and-2 pitch from J.P. Howell. And in the ninth, it was a two-out homer by red-hot Vernon Wells (9-for-14 with four homers in three games) off Jason Hammel.
"We needed to keep it there at 3-2 to have a chance to win that thing," Maddon said.
The crowd was the second smallest since late May.

It makes total sense to move the team to Tampa where it should have been all along. It is the residential, commercial and entertainment center of our region and ALL ROADS LEAD TO TAMPA. St. Pete is too far for everyone.

I am amazed at people whining about the attendance. This is a business, and the pros don't care about the fans. I pay to go to a game, no player or official cares about us. It is a business. There is no "deserve". Jeez, grow up.

Why are fellow Tampa residents so childish and provincial? Doug, Mike Creyton and Kurt - the team is in St. Pete, please stop whining. It takes less time for me to go from downtown after work to downtown St. Pete than it does to get to New Tampa.

Last night's crowd was sad. Kurt, Mike C.& Doug keep dreaming about that Tampa location. It's not going to happen...we're already saddled with paying for RayJay, Times Forum and Legends Field. The next move the Rays will make is out of Florida.

Leave BJ alone, he is 23 and the face of the Rays. What were you the face of at 23? Times are tough for him but he isn't the worst hitter on that team. One person over .300 and first place? I'll take that...keep working on your swing BJ, I support ya

I think BJ's problem is that he is just spoiled and too lazy to play hard unless it is a grandstand play in the outfield. He doesn't have the heart to play with this team. Sorry to say this, but he needs to go..

I've been to 4 games this month and last night also. 1/3rd of the suites and club seats were non occuopied. Where are the corporate $$?? There will be great walk up crowds this weekend.

All you folks in Hills that want the Rays, what makes you think Pinellas fans want to fight 5,6,7 pm traffic on the Frankenstein to get to a game in Tampa. Your attendance will suck too if the team moves. Weekend games have great attendance!

Mark you are 50% correct about BJ. You have to take the good with the bad.Maddon should have used Zobrist to pinch hit in place of Riggans. The 4 lefties that hit before him each hit the ball hard.I'm sure Halladay was happy to see a righty come up.

Shields needed to be lights out but wasn't. Ball wasn't bouncing our way. We'll get em tonight!

I've been a season ticket holder 6 years now. Think the crowds are small now? Huge compared to the past ghost-town nights. Change comes slowly. You can't expect a 180 degree turn-around overnight, especially with this team's past.

I am a Rays fan from the begining, happens that I am at this point for the summer in Michigan, this past weekend I drove 9 hours to see the Rays play Chicago WSox, it is amayzing watch this team, is 45 minutes from Tampa to the Trop, give me a break.

Already surpassed '07 full year attendance & will be best since 1st year BY FAR. Merchandise sales up 100%+, leading indicator of growing fan base. Takes time to build a base. Watch crowds grow over this homestand. Go Rays!

Kurt, why don't you get your fat rear end off the couch and come over to the 727 and watch some games....or are you stuck to the pizza that's been on your couch for the past month...clean up your double wide every once in a while!

Move the team to Tampa? Yeah right!

If you're complaining about attendance, you better be attending. I live in Lutz and was out of my seat and in my house in 45 minutes. Lastly: losing to Hallday will happen. The team will rebound tonight.

I'm sick of the "move it to Tampa" speech. Pinellas makes up at least half of the Bucs crowd. The least you so called "fans" in Tampa can do is show a little support. Same drive for you to get to the Trop as it is for us to get to Ray Jay.

At least us "low class folks in the 727" know how to spell correctly.
by Kurt
Aug 27, 2008 10:31 AM
I bet half of the weak crowd was from Tampa. The low class folks in the 727 don't make up the fan base, others do. Move the team to Tampa, a proper city, and the attendace will jump.

Suck it up. It's a half hour from Tampa to the Trop in the PM. If you were a real fan, you'd make the drive...oh wait, your aren't a real fan. You're a fair weather fan.

settle, people, settle! Let's give them the home stand before we start talking about next year! Geez Louise- once Longo comes back and Perci is healthy enough to help the bullpen, we will recover our bearings. Crowd was embarrassing, though.

I hope this new stadium group that is working on a new location is watching. Weekend crowds are huge regardless of the opponent. Weekday crowds stink. Its because the fan base is isolated from the stadium. Move the Rays to Tampa!

Can someone please tell why BJ Upton is still playing. There is no sence or urgency and a complete lack of will and talent. What are people seeing in this guy that I am missing? In person he looks twice as bad as he does on TV. He is costing us games
by John
Aug 27, 2008 9:57 AM
Riggans on Sunday is the reason for no fans on Tuesday. Viable fans in East Hillsborough, New Tampa, Pasco, etc are generally not going to the Trop on a work night. Fans closeby in Pinellas are sedentary and happy to stay home with Dwayne & Joe.

Attendance won't be so embarrassing when they ditch St. Pete & move across the bay. People won't drive to St. Pete and then get home late when it's a school/work night, against the Jays, and they can watch it on TV. Location Location Location

I'm a huge Rays fan and I have season tickets, but I am beginning to believe it is best if this team moves out of state. Tampa Bay cannot support a MLB team.

The attendance was a joke. Thanks again to everyone in Tampa that refuses to cross the bridge and support this team despite the documented support given to the Bucs and Bolts from those of us in Pinellas. How does the Portland Rays sound to you?

I'm so po'd to think this area wanted a decent team, and yet nobody's showing up for the games.
And then watching most leave in the 8th and not supporting them to the end isn't great either.
