ST. PETERSBURG — The Rays appear to have found a lefty relief specialist, reaching a preliminary agreement with 40-year-old Brian Shouse on a two-year deal.
Shouse, a sidearmer, held lefties to a .180 average (and .192 on-base percentage) in 69 games last season for Milwaukee, going 5-1 with a 2.80 ERA. The deal is pending a physical this week, and the Rays won't confirm it until then. It is a one-year deal with a one-year option, likely at less than $2 million per season.
"Brian is extremely effective on the mound. He's one of the best influences you'll find in the clubhouse. And he wanted to come to Tampa," agent Slade Mead said. "It's an absolutely perfect fit."
Shouse made $2 million last season and declined arbitration, becoming a Type B free agent. The Rays don't have to give up a draft pick.
Shouse made his major-league debut in 1993 at age 24 for Pittsburgh and has also pitched for the Red Sox, Royals and Rangers. He didn't spend a full season in the majors until 2005.
