Home, sweet home: James Shields is glad to be pitching at home (where his ERA last season was 2.59 compared with 4.82 on the road). He said he built confidence in his last start (seven scoreless innings in a victory at Baltimore).

Comeback Colon: Bartolo Colon, 35, who won the Cy Young award while with the Angels in 2005, is trying to make a comeback from injuries. He looked sharp in his first start, pitching six scoreless innings in a win over the Twins.

Matchups: Pat Burrell is 4-for-14 against Colon, Carl Crawford 6-for-26 and Carlos Peña 6-for-25 with 14 strikeouts.

First pitches of the day

ESPN college basketball analyst and Hall of Famer Dick Vitale, a Lakewood Ranch resident and Rays season ticket holder, threw out the ceremonial first pitches. He was there supporting the Miles for Moffitt race with several cancer survivors — and participants of the road/walk race — behind him as he made two throws, a one-hopper and high fastball, to RHP Chad Bradford.

Quote of the day

"It's not Percival material, but I'm not Percival material, either."

RHP Joe Nelson, joking about moving into his St. Pete Beach rental after being a houseguest of closer Troy Percival at his Clearwater condo for a few days
