Rays may be working to acquire outfielder Peter Bourjos

The Rays' search for outfield depth may be leading to Peter Bourjos.

There were indications late Monday that the Rays were working to acquire Bourjos, who is in camp with the White Sox on a minor-league deal.

Bourjos, 31 on Friday, would give the Rays the right-handed-hitting outfielder capable of filling in in centerfield they have been looking for. He has played previously for the Angels, Cardinals and Phillies.

A deal, if completed, could be announced sometime today.

METS LEFTY REMAINS IFFY: Mets LHP Steven Matz made it through a 55-pitch flat-ground session despite his recent elbow flareup, but his status for the first week of the regular season remains in doubt.

Matz was scratched from his scheduled spring start because of elbow tenderness. In its place, Matz threw from roughly 70 feet in four separate, inning-type parts, with a pause between, under the guidance of pitching coach Dan Warthen.

"I wasn't too worried about it," Matz said. "Just had to back it down. It felt good."

INDIANS: A jury said the team isn't responsible for injuries to a New York man hit by a foul ball and blinded in one eye at a game in July 2012. The decision late last week in a Cleveland-area county court means Keith Rawlins of Rochester gets no money from his lawsuit against the team.

NATIONALS: Veteran RH reliever Joe Nathan was released, ending his bid to make the team a week before opening day. Nathan, 42, has 377 career saves, second among active pitchers and eighth in baseball history.

ORIOLES: RHP Kevin Gausman will start the April 3 season opener against the Blue Jays.

PHILLIES: Former Rays C Ryan Hanigan was released, along with Bryan Holaday, meaning Andrew Knapp will be the backup catcher.

RANGERS: Veteran 1B and former Ray James Loney was released from his minor-league contract. Also, former Rays knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa was optioned to Triple-A Round Rock.

REDS: OF Ryan Raburn, a former Durant High standout, was released after he struggled in a bid to win a bench role.

RED SOX: RH reliever Tyler Thornburg was scratched from a scheduled appearance against the Orioles because of a spasm in his upper right trapezius. Thornburg hasn't pitched in a major-league spring training game since March 1 because of weakness in his right shoulder and is likely to open the season on the disabled list.

ROCKIES: OF David Dahl told the Denver Post that he will not play in the home opener next week, meaning he will miss at least the first five games of the regular season. Dahl has been sidelined since late February with a rib injury.

ROYALS: RF Jorge Soler will likely begin his first season in Kansas City on the disabled list after straining his oblique in a minor-league game.
