Rays-Angels preview

vs. Angels

Tonight through Thursday

What's new: The Angels (58-71) are one of baseball's biggest disappointments. A winter spending spree hasn't paid off, with OF Josh Hamilton hitting .235 (albeit with 19 HRs). 1B Albert Pujols is out for the year with plantar fasciitis. Reigning rookie of the year CF Mike Trout has had a nice follow-up, and Mark Trumbo has 29 HRs, but the team 4.40 ERA is third worst in the league.

Key stat: The Angels have 89 errors, third most in the AL.

Connections: Manager Joe Maddon spent 31 years in Angels organization, most of the last 10 as bench coach. 1B coach George Hendrick is a former Angel, as are C Jose Molina, RHPs Fernando Rodney and Joel Peralta and INF Sean Rodriguez. LHP Alex Torres is ex-Angels minor-leaguer. Angels OF Josh Hamilton was a Rays No. 1 pick, and RHP Dane De La Rosa an ex-Ray reliever.

Series history: First meeting this season. Angels lead 79-58, 36-31 at Trop.
