Rays-Blue Jays preview

vs. Blue Jays

Tonight-Thursday

What's new: The Jays have thus far been the biggest busts of the season, their expensive makeover resulting in an 11-21 record and media speculation of clubhouse discord under new (old) manager John Gibbons. Even with Sunday's win they have lost 14 of 19 and have a run differential of minus-28 in that span. The problems have been broad, with a supposedly high-octane offense ranking at or near the bottom of the league in average, runs, and on-base percentage. The pitching and defense have been among the league's worst. Injuries have been an issue, with SS Jose Reyes and RHPs Josh Johnson and Sergio Santos among those on the disabled list.

Key stat: The Jays last week went 23 innings without a run and scored one or none in four straight games until Sunday's 10-run outburst.

Connections: Rays C Jose Molina and INFs Yunel Escobar, Kelly Johnson and Ryan Roberts are former Jays.

Series history: First meeting this season. The Rays lead 136-121 overall, 77-50 in home games.
