What's new: Since leaving the Trop on Wednesday night, the D'backs have been busy. They lost a makeup game in Texas and two of three in Boston, added LH reliever Joe Thatcher after trading RHP Ian Kennedy, reinstated RHP Brandon McCarthy from the DL, dumped LH reliever Tony Sipp and called up C Tuffy Gosewisch after putting C Miguel Montero on the DL. Also, SS Cliff Pennington sat out Sunday with a sore left foot. They have lost six of eight overall.

Key stat: 1B Paul Goldschmidt has five homers in his past 11 games and 26 overall, tied for second in the NL.

Connections: Rays INF/OF Kelly Johnson and INF Ryan Roberts are former D'backs; so, too, is TV analyst Brian Anderson, an expansion draft pick who played on their 2001 championship team.

Series history: Rays lead 9-5 overall, 4-2 in Phoenix.
