Taking one for the team

3B coach Tom Foley was surprised to find out he got ejected Saturday for what he said were fairly benign comments to home plate ump Paul Nauert after a questionable strike three call on SS Yunel Escobar. That was considerably different than his only other ejection as a coach, on Lou Piniella's 2003 staff. "I was just arguing until Lou got out there (to third base) and he took his sweet time," Foley said. "I ran out of things to do, so I kicked the bag and (Ed Rapuano) threw me out. I'm like, 'Lou, what took you so long?' And he goes, 'Tommy, I can't get thrown out every night.' "

'Off' days

Manager Joe Maddon encourages the Rays to get their minds off baseball when they can, but they may be taking the concept of off days too far. The Rays are 1-8 in games following scheduled off days, and 2-9 when you add in coming off rainouts. Noting they were due into Tampa around 5:30 a.m. Monday, OF Sam Fuld on Sunday had a tongue-in-cheek suggestion: "I think tomorrow we're going to play a scrimmage to make sure we're sharp on Tuesday."

Dates of the day

Aug. 22, Sept. 9

  3. Bucs running back's gamble pays off for his mom

TAMPA — When Peyton Barber decided to leave Auburn after his sophomore year, with only one season as a starting running back, it was a risky decision, one he hoped would let him help out his family back home in suburban Atlanta.
