Rays: Longoria models Timberlake T-shirt

Bringing sexy back?

3B Evan Longoria does a lot on the field that separates him from other players. And now this — perhaps the only big-leaguer sporting a Justin Timberlake concert T-shirt under his uniform. Longoria (right) is a big fan, and fiancee Jaime Edmondson brought him the shirt after attending a recent JT show.

Quotes of the day

"It started out poorly … and then it was pretty much backward after that." Manager Joe Maddon, on Saturday's rough day

"It was a (expletive) outing." RHP Grant Balfour, on his performance

Game boys

For a couple of weeks, the Rays have been shooting at a SKLZ mini-basketball hoop and backboard in the clubhouse. On Friday, RHP Heath Bell marked out a 3-point arc and full free-throw lane with tape on the carpet. "Thought I'd make it more official since they were playing games," he said. There also were portable monitors set up in three empty lockers Saturday, being used for soccer, hockey and Call of Duty video games, and a pingpong table in another complex building.

Who is this Ray?

Cut from seventh-grade baseball team. Traded twice before making majors. Named "Mr. Christmas" in his North Carolina hometown.

Rays hang on to beat Angels 5-3 behind Robertson slam, get back to .500

ANAHEIM, Calif. – Playing .500 ball is obviously no goal, and the Rays certainly know that. But given where they came from, that terrible 1-8 start that oozed into 3-12 and 4-13, climbing back to the respectability of .500 would be an accomplish...
