Rays: Longoria's no-frills engagement

Quote of the day

"On my 70th birthday, I'm glad to be here."

Minor-league pitching coordinator Dick Bosman, who pitched 11 seasons in the majors and threw a no-hitter in '74 with the Indians.

Number of the day

20 Position players, of 24, who have reported in advance of Thursday's first full-squad workout. Not here yet are Wilson Betemit, Yunel Escobar, Logan Forsythe and Ben Zobrist.

It's not always about location

OF Mikie Mahtook has arguably the worst locker in the Charlotte Sports Park clubhouse, tucked back in the corner, across from the towel shelves and adjacent to the open entranceway to the showers and bathroom. And, given that he is a 24-year-old 2011 first-round pick making his first appearance in big-league camp, it doesn't bother him one bit. "I'm just happy to be here," he said.

List of the day

After six seasons, Evan Longoria is near the top of many Rays leaderboards:

Stat No. (Rk) Leader

HRs 162 (2) C. Peña, 163

RBIs 544 (2) Crawford, 592

2Bs 200 (3) Crawford, 215

XBH 373 (2) Crawford, 424

Splish, splash, they were taking a bath …

So how exactly did 3B Evan Longoria propose to long-time girlfriend Jaime Edmondson this offseason? "We were in the bathtub," Longoria said. "It was uneventful. She had already made it blatantly clear she didn't want any theatrics." They're planning to get married after the 2015 season.

New Joe-cabulary entry of the day

"Data-mentals": Manager Joe Maddon's new word, explaining how a small piece of statistical info can help a player improve. "It goes way beyond fundamentals. Data-mentals also can really exceed what you can teach physically or mentally."
