Spring training

Rays: Longoria's no-frills engagement

Quote of the day

"On my 70th birthday, I'm glad to be here."

Minor-league pitching coordinator Dick Bosman, who pitched 11 seasons in the majors and threw a no-hitter in '74 with the Indians.

Number of the day

20 Position players, of 24, who have reported in advance of Thursday's first full-squad workout. Not here yet are Wilson Betemit, Yunel Escobar, Logan Forsythe and Ben Zobrist.

It's not always about location

OF Mikie Mahtook has arguably the worst locker in the Charlotte Sports Park clubhouse, tucked back in the corner, across from the towel shelves and adjacent to the open entranceway to the showers and bathroom. And, given that he is a 24-year-old 2011 first-round pick making his first appearance in big-league camp, it doesn't bother him one bit. "I'm just happy to be here," he said.

List of the day

After six seasons, Evan Longoria is near the top of many Rays leaderboards:

Stat No. (Rk) Leader

HRs 162 (2) C. Peña, 163

RBIs 544 (2) Crawford, 592

2Bs 200 (3) Crawford, 215

XBH 373 (2) Crawford, 424

Splish, splash, they were taking a bath …

So how exactly did 3B Evan Longoria propose to long-time girlfriend Jaime Edmondson this offseason? "We were in the bathtub," Longoria said. "It was uneventful. She had already made it blatantly clear she didn't want any theatrics." They're planning to get married after the 2015 season.

New Joe-cabulary entry of the day

"Data-mentals": Manager Joe Maddon's new word, explaining how a small piece of statistical info can help a player improve. "It goes way beyond fundamentals. Data-mentals also can really exceed what you can teach physically or mentally."

  1. Marc Topkin's takeaways from Friday's Rays-Orioles game

    The Heater

RHP Alex Cobb hates to hear how he "battled through" or "grinded out" a start rather than just dominated, but that's kind of what he did Friday, allowing nine hits and a walk and being charged with two wild pitches but only three runs in earning his 12th win.

  2. Lightning's Steven Stamkos looks close to top form in first game since November

    Lightning Strikes

TAMPA — Lightning captain Steven Stamkos was curious how he would feel — and perform — in Friday's exhibition against Nashville, his first game since mid-November knee surgery.

The Lightning’s Alex Killorn, left, makes his preseason debut and has an assist in a 3-1 win against the Predators at Amalie Arena.
  3. Rays journal: Rays tie franchise home run record

    The Heater

BALTIMORE — A major flaw in the Rays offense this season — and thus a major reason for their inconsistent play and losing record — has been too much reliance on the home run.

Wilson Ramos points after hitting a grand slam during the second inning, putting the Rays up 4-0.
  4. Ww's Odessabeach makes run at Husker Magic stakes final

    Parimutuels

ST. PETERSBURG — When Hurricane Irma blew through Florida earlier this month, Ww's Odessabeach remained in her comfort zone.

  5. Steven Souza Jr. vindicating big trade for Rays

    The Heater

BALTIMORE — There was a time when the three-team, 11-player transaction the Rays orchestrated to get Steven Souza Jr. from the Nationals looked liked a bad deal.

The Rays’ Steven Souza Jr. has 30 home runs while improving his defense and baserunning.
