Tip of the hat

The Rays broke out new cold-weather ski hats on this trip, complete with the fuzzy ball on top. While some had the top trimmed, manager Joe Maddon wore his proudly. "I think the original knit hat like this came equipped with the fuzzy top, so I'm not opposed to going with it," he said. "I don't feel less masculine for keeping it on the top of my hat."

Birthday boy

Rays RHP Jeremy Hellickson, recovering from elbow surgery, celebrated his 27th birthday Tuesday with family who made the three-hour drive from their Des Moines, Iowa, home. His mom came just for lunch, and also dropped off a cake for him at the stadium. One problem: It was also Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie's birthday, so the cake apparently got sent to the Royals clubhouse. "Still trying to track it down," Hellickson said.

Number of the day

Consecutive wins by the Rays vs. starters 22 and younger after Tuesday's victory in a game started by Yordano Ventura.
