First, Rays manager Joe Maddon was "immortalized" with a gnome, an early season promotional item that was so popular the Rays added a second giveaway date (Aug. 3). And to promote that event, there will be a sand sculpture of the gnome built on St. Pete Beach this morning. The sculpting starts at 8:30 at the Guy Harvey Outpost (6000 Gulf Blvd.), and should be done between 11 and noon, with the Ray Team prize-givers on hand.
Riding the rails
RHP Chris Archer didn't have much exposure to trains growing up in small-town North Carolina. The 24-year-old took his first ride with the Rays last season, then Thursday ventured out on his own for the 3½-hour trip from Boston to New York. "It was cool, fun, scenic," Archer said. "I just read, relaxed, reflected. … My first big-boy train ride."
