Rays: Quotes, numbers on Price

Helping hands needed

The Rays and manager Joe Maddon are launching an initiative to help area homeless shelters called the Rays Thanksmas Day of Volunteering on July 11. Maddon and team employees will serve lunch that day at the Trinity Cafe in Tampa. Anyone who volunteers to help that day at other area shelters (Salvation Army centers in St. Petersburg, Tampa and Bradenton; the Homeless Emergency Project in Clearwater) will get a ticket to the July 27 game vs. Boston, a Thanksmas Day of Volunteering T-shirt and the opportunity to be included in a group photo with Maddon. Registration is open through July 8 at raysbaseball.com/thanksmas.

David Price numbers of the day

5 Consecutive games with 10 or more strikeouts, the first pitcher to do so since Johan Santana for Minnesota in 2004.

8 Games with 10 or more K's for the season, a team record and three more than any other pitcher (Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka).

54 Strikeouts in five June starts, surpassing Rays team record for any month, 50 by Scott Kazmir in August 2007.

292 Strikeouts Price is on pace for, which would be the most in the majors since 2002, in the AL since 1999.

David Price quotes of the day

"I want him to be here for as long as I'm here. Is that a realistic statement — maybe, maybe not. But in the end, anybody who has him on their team is much better off." — 3B Evan Longoria

"As far as I'm concerned, he is a Ray. … I don't lament the potentiality of the situation." — manager Joe Maddon

"I'm sure it's been said before, but Price was right today. … His 107th pitch of the day was 97 mph. He was on his game today." — Pirates manger Clint Hurdle

David Price historic note of the day

With a 2-3 record in his five 10-K games, Price, per Elias, is just the second pitcher in modern history (since 1900) to have a losing record in such a stretch, joining Nolan Ryan (1-3 in 1989 for Texas).
