Who is this Ray: RHP Roberto Hernandez (formerly Fausto Carmona)

A real pain in the neck

RHP Joel Peralta was the first casualty of the spring, sidelined Wednesday, and maybe for a few days, due to a stiff neck. How? It was one of those weird spring things: He stopped at the Cuban Taste shop for some sandwiches on his way to the field Tuesday, and as he got out of his Camaro his neck popped and went stiff.

Roll Tide

CF Desmond Jennings, in case you hadn't heard, is a big Alabama football fan (and former recruit). So it was absolutely no surprise when he reported Wednesday sporting not just a national championship sweatshirt but a T-shirt as well. "Of course," Jennings said. "Bought 'em the first day."

Who is this Ray?

He comes from a farming family and helped out with the cattle this offseason. Has one of the best groundball to flyball ratios in the majors. Spent 12 years in the Cleveland organization and seven seasons with the Indians.

The dish

Today's workout for pitchers and catchers starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Charlotte Sports Park (2300 El Jobean Road, Port Charlotte) and lasts about 2 hours. Admission and parking free. Driving time from the bay area is 1½-2 hours. Suggested route: I-75 South to Toledo Blade Road, go west 6½ miles to El Jobean Road (SR 776), go right 2 miles, stadium complex is on left. For more information: (941) 235-5025.

Heads up

Among the pitchers scheduled to throw off the mound are Jeremy Hellickson, Matt Moore, Alex Cobb and Jake McGee.

Some new tricks

Rays ace LHP David Price is pretty talented, but sometimes he gets upstaged by his French bulldog, Astro. Wednesday, Astro — wearing its own Rays jersey — showed off some new tricks, including "high-fiving" Price. See the oh-so-cute video at tampabay.com/blogs/rays.

Quote of the day

"Yeah, I did like probably an extra 100 pushups a night."

LHP Matt Moore, joking when asked if he'd done extra offseason training to be able to pitch more innings.

TAMPA — It all began with a fidget spinner.

  2. Perfection's not easy in baseball, just ask Calvary Christian

    Baseballpreps

CLEARWATER — Of the more than 300 varsity high school baseball teams in Florida, only one has won every game this season: Calvary Christian. The Warriors are a perfect 28-0.

He would not talk about the drug he abused. He didn’t identify the rehab facility he entered last January or how long he was there.
