They lead MLB in runs, doubles and on-base percentage and have a plus-80 run differential. CF Jacoby Ellsbury and DH David Ortiz have been hot, along with SS Jose Iglesias. The starting pitching has been among the league's best.

Key stat: Sox hitters, going into play Sunday, led the majors with 4.07 pitches seen per plate appearance, with Mike Napoli and Dustin Pedroia ranking 1-2.

Connections: OF Jonny Gomes is a former Rays favorite and 3B coach Brian Butterfield is a former Eckerd College assistant. … Rays Alex Cobb, Brandon Gomes and Sam Fuld are New Englanders.
